A note about Diesel...

That place is great...people need to start going there.

Why go to city club when you could go to a club that's clean (but not sterile), has good music, awesome decor (it really looks badass in there), and friendly people working there?

A friend and I went there and it was awesome, I really like that place. Drinks were $5, premium beers $4. Cover was $5 which is very reasonable for a club of this quality.

Plus, it has a rotating dance floor, how cool is that?

I'd be a hell of a lot more likely to check out other places if people advocating other venues would knock it off with this damned "City Club sucks so you should stop going there and go here instead" attitude.

Whether you realize it or not, you're in a way insulting people who do enjoy going to CC.

There's room in my life for multiple venues. I go to CC for one thing, perhaps I'll give Diesel a try and go there for something else. No need to tell (the collective) me that I'm making a bad choice if I opt for CC over Diesel. Just tell me how great Diesel is and it'll jog my curiosity without negativity, and make me more likely to want to give it a shot.

lol...are you joking?

The fact is...its open on the same night, and yes it is competing for the same crowd. The woman who bought the Jag nightclub and transformed into Diesel is putting forward a much better product than Mike Higgins is with the Leland City Club. She should be rewarded for it.

Its not so much that I don't like going to City Club. But the fact is, its not the only club in the world. Why pretend like it is?

While I do like to check out other clubs, I generally choose to go to City Club for a few reasons:

1. I've been going there for almost 8 years, so it's comfortable.

2. I tend to find most other clubs boring. Luna is ok on video appreciation night and Industrial night. A month or so ago I went with some people on a Friday and I was bored to tears. I went to Mephisto's a few months ago and was bored, but I've heard more people go there now, so I am willing to give it another go.

3. The drinks tend to not be all that strong at other clubs. It makes me a bit pissed off when I spend $30 and all I have is a slight buzz, where I can spend $30 at City and be shitfaced.

4. I can go to City Club alone and not feel weird. This is not true of other clubs.

5. People tend to be more friendly with me at City than at other clubs.

I am not trying to say that one club is better than another, but FOR ME, City is just a better choice. I am all for people checking out other clubs and trying new things.

Of course I wasn't joking. No need to patronize me. And where in the world in my post did I say, or infer, that CC is the ONLY club in the world?

I pointedly observed the "existence" of Diesel and even that I'd like to give it a try. Hardly reads like I'm pretending that it is the "only club in the world." Nor did I try to dissuade anyone from going to Diesel by saying CC is "better". Unlike many here who seem to make it a mission to close CC's doors for some unfathomable reason.

You were at CC last night, and Diesel was open. So look at your own self and answer this question, "why do I go to CC if another place is open?"

To each their own, and to some of us - viva variety. "Much better"? How about "different"? A tad less elitist, no? Less judgmental of other's choices.

I want to frequent VARIOUS places in the Detroit area. But I sure as hell don't want to mingle with a crowd of people who feel comfortable telling me there's something wrong with me if I like going to Club B once in a while.

No, I meant what I said. Without a doubt...Diesel is a much better club than City Club...its a shame that people feel such loyalty. I don't understand why City Club is club A, when there are BETTER options.

The reason I was at CC on Saturday is because I went to Diesel the night before. I wasn't even planning on going out, but some friends called and wanted to go.

I'm also not sure why you are taking this so personally. I don't remember posting that there was something wrong with you. Now, because of your reaction, I'm starting to wonder if there isn't something wrong with you.

What's going on with this site lately, I posted a positive review of a club, compared it to its competition (it is a business), and I get attacked?

Seriously, is there something in the water?

I'd say you just posted your opinion of both clubs. That's what it looks like to me, but what we have to also remember is that to some people City Club is home. When I first experienced CC long ago it was the first time I felt accepted for being me. I could be myself and there was nothing wrong with that. I'm guessing FC has a similar story. I may bash CC from time to time, but I still love it.

I just don't think you realize how you're coming across.

If there's anything wrong with me, it's that I'm tired of sitting back and letting comments like this go. The only thing "in the water" is a really bad rash of judgment. You - and others promoting non-CC clubs - are the ones doing the attacking, putting me, and others, on the defensive.

And it's not just me. I received PM's from people saying, basically, "thanks for saying what I didn't have the guts to say publicly." I'm taking the heat for having the balls to say it out loud.

I have absolutely no beef with you whatsoever on or off the board - except the way you choose to - if ever so indirectly - bash people's preferences.

What is "better" is so totally subjective. People told me Mephisto's was better. We checked it out. Both Jon and myself didn't like it. We can see - totally - what people like about the place. They're just not the same types of things that make a club night "good" for us.

And I would never tell someone, "hey - don't go to Mephisto's 'cause it sucks and CC is so much better" if they prefer Mephisto's. That just sounds so totally arrogant. DisturbedMania kindly gave Jon and I a grand tour of Mephisto's when we first went there. She obviously liked a LOT about the place and was enthusiastic about the types of things going on there. I respect her preference for the place over CC and would never dream of telling her she's somehow lacking in judgment for having such. Nor would I think she was somehow wrong in having such a preference.

You, and several other people, insist on posting in a manner that comes off very judgmental of people who have decided they prefer CC. Whether it's someone promoting Diesel, Mephisto's, Necto, whatever.

It's just a really, really bad way to encourage people to give another place a try. It's like a Ford car salesman telling someone who has purchased Chevys their whole life that Chevy's totally suck. You're insulting the personal choices of a person, and likely to drive them away rather than make them interested in what you are promoting.

Better to just push the things you see as good, and not be so critical.

Oh I think it's time I posted in this thread. I'm sure everyone on here already knows how I feel about CC. Let me go over all of it again though just to be sure.

Good points about the place:

#1. Largest dancefloor of any of the clubs including Necto which comes in at a close second.

#2. The ONLY goth club open later than 02:00 A.M.

#3. The crowd is usually massive (or at least it used to be, haven't been back since Feb and even then it dropped off a little).

Then there are the reasons I will NEVER go back (to either city or lab, let us not forget to include that, or lets just say the Leland building period).

Bad popints about the place:

#1. Mike Higgins is a pedophile slumloard faggot. Not that I have anything against gay people but he's a penny pinching pedophile slumloard faggot (who owes me money for 3 days work no less).

#2. That building NEEDS to be CONDEMNED in a serious way. I'm sure you all remember my LJ entries, but just in case, here are the links YET AGAIN.

http://www.livejournal.com/users/scary_guy/127033.html

#3. It's the cornerstone of the gothic/industrial community in Detroit. I want to prove we don't need it to have the culture thrive here, and the culture is growing.

Now before you write everything I say off as "Oh he works for Mephisto's, he's just bashing the competition" please allow me to point two things out.

#1. I've felt this way about City Club since around October of 2003, BEFORE I started working at Mephisto's, but after my first trip to Mephisto's. Thats when I realized there were nicer clubs out there. Actually I think I realised this when I first went to The Groove Room. which brings me to my second point.

#2. I do not bash any other clubs and in fact like the competition. Competition is good for the scene, it gives people options, keeps the price in check, makes the DJs try harder. I like Luna, Necto, and now Disel and I liked Star Bar in it's hay day on Thursdays.

As far as Mephisto's goes I love it and it is my favorite club, yes partly because I work there, and partly because I'm good friends with the owner. But again thats not why I hate LCC/Lab/the leland building. I just want better for the people who go there and can't see why when better places exist with staff that actually gives a shit about their patrons and cares about what happens to them they would go there, to that post apocolyptic wasteland of a building.

Everyone has a right to go wherever they want and like whatever they want, I just want better for them. I like the fact that Mephisto's is clean, and I know just exactly how clean because I get to clean it. I break my back for that place and put blood sweat and tears into getting it just as close to perfect as possible for everyone to have a good time in. What I'm trying to say is yes, everyone has a right to go where they like, but I seriously don't agree on CC being anything less than a slum. At least we actually upgrade our equipment every so often and fix the things that break. We're not rich, Higgins is, and he could do so much for that building it seriously makes me sad that he doesn't give a shit.

Anyhow thats all I have to say.

I just spoke with the manager Suzette at Diesel. My friend Kristen and I will be meeting her this Wednesday to discuss building their web site and also me djing a Friday gig there probably once a month. Many of you know that recently I tried to get the Lab going again which was not going to happen. You were right there Scary guy. As far as the other clubs go, I have good nights when I go out and bad just like everyone else. I just want people to have a good time in an a place with a lot of atmosphere. I appreciated that when I first started going out to goth clubs and what not. As for CC, I admit Im a little bitter at how the management treated me with the whole Lab night but thats life and I have more important things in life to think about:) CC has good nights and bad nights just like every club. As for Diesel, I like it very much obviously. The staff is very nice which I havent felt anywhere else. I think it would be cool to fill the place up with a regular goth scene. It just seems like a good fit. In any event, hope to see some of you there sometime.

Much as Jon and I like CC on Saturday, we're looking for more variety on the weekend, especially someplace different we can go on Friday. Going to CC twice a weekend every weekend would get very, very stale I think.

We'll be giving Diesel a try on Friday very soon, and it may become a regular thing for us.

It'll be nice to have someplace else to go - in addition to CC. :wink

Why do you care whether or not I think that City Club is a shit hole and has been for years? Why is that its earned the reputation as "Shitty Club" ?

That's fantastic. I've received messages asking why you were being such a bitch about it. I'm glad we have that clear.
