Oh, damn. Kittens... maybe...

Recommended Posts

We thought Calder would be adopted out by now. And Tiki went into heat.

We weren't too concerned because Calder treats her like his surrogate mom. He suckles on her, and when she's been in heat before, he showed no interest whatsoever. Too young maybe.

Not this time. God, I hope she's infertile. She's an odd cat, odd size, with odd behaviors. If we didn't know she'd been hit by a car, we'd swear the 3-legged condition was due to a birth defect. She's sweet, but... odd.

Nothing we can do at this point except wait & watch. Calder will be fixed ASAP. If he's not done before one of the FOUR fertile cats in this house next goes into heat, he will be quarantined.

I just know this is karma for having jibed Brenda for being in just this situation. Karma's a bitch, eh? :wink

I'll keep updates coming. If she has kits, I'll need to find homes...

Fingers crossed...

Why did you decide not to have your female cats spayed?  I've always had mine done very young, and according to my vet it prevents certain female cancers and generally makes for a happier, healthier kitty.

Oh, no - you've got it wrong. This wasn't a purposeful decision.

2 of the ladies are still kittens, and 2 of them weren't supposed to be permanent residents. And Calder also wasn't supposed to be permanent. But every person who said they wanted one of them here in MI fell through, and I ended up with 3 "extras" all needing spaying/neutering on top of the ones I was going to keep myself.

ALL my animals, including my rabbit, get spayed/neutered. Circumstances of the sudden move put a monkeywrench into the situation. And now I've ended up possibly in a situation I've always pleaded other people to avoid. Fuck.

Back in NC, we had a great vet who did this stuff real cheap, and would let me write a post-dated check for as long as I needed to pay. It's been hell finding all that down here. Most of these city vets are either unwilling to work with me financially or super-expensive.

Tiki was supposed to be spayed for free from the vet we adopted her from. But we also got 3 other cats from him. He returned all 3 cats to me looking like they'd been massacred, and in obvious pain. There was no way in hell I was going to let him touch Tiki, who I believe was abused by one of his employees.

I'm going to contact all the rescue groups I can find and see if someone will let me get Calder neutered in their name for cheap. If I get him done first, that gives me time for our finances to further improve so I can start getting the ladies done one at a time.

Phoebe & Ray haven't gone into heat yet. Lets hope that holds for a little while longer. And that if Tiki is pregnant, she has a very, very small litter.

Yep, that is very true for both male and female cats. I worked as a vet tech for 4 years and this was a reaccuring problem.

Thanks, HM. And GM - thanks for pointing that out about Amerist. I'll see if I can contact her.

I stayed up last night and sent an e-mail to probably 2-dozen rescue groups in the area. I have gotten a couple responses, but the most promising is one that will give you a voucher through their group to have a female done for $40 and a male for $30. They're also going to see if they can cut the price for me for now even more.

Waiting for a response from them. This could happen as soon as tomorrow.

I'm so worried about my Tiki. She's had such a tough life. She's so small. I am glad to be able to have this potential pregnancy stopped, 'cause I had been wondering if it could potentially endanger her life.

Once Calder is neutered, it gives me more time to get the rest of the ladies done.

Oh - and Calder is still available for adoption people!!!! :grin
