The_Dark
So, last night my son was informing me that they have no school today because it is the first day of hunting season. It's a rather common thing up here... Hunting is how half the people from the area feed their familys in the winter. I've never had the problem letting the kids off from school that day. Until last night.... My 14 year old son mumbled something about being pissed off and that it was "not right"... So I asked him waht he just said.. He wouldn't tell me as he thought he was going to get yelled at for swearing. I finally convinved him his mother was not in ear shot and that he was allowed to say what ever he needed to say to me.... and my son.. I'm so proud... my son said "Dad... it pisses me off. We have the first day of hunting season off... but we had to go to school on Veterans Day. Dad, Thats just not right." We then had a long discussion about why they would have to day off school... I had all kinds of economic and safety reason for not having school today... I could think of no reason as to why they didn't get Veterans day off. Onyx
It is sad that veteran's day doesn't get very much attention in a lot of areas. That's pretty cool that he is thinking of things on his own like this at a young age.
ZhukovCodeslinger
I could think of no reason as to why they didn't get Veterans day off. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> reason 1, Hillbillies care more about killing deer than veterans.Reason 2, more money is spent hunting etc, because it is treated like a vacation Reason 3, Deer Widows love to party... really love it... some of them even try to hook up with a different guy per day while their husband is hunting reason 4, the war on deer must be won! Those suicide leapers hurt many people and destroy lots of automobiles every year...
The_Dark
I really hope your joking Zhuk... Most hillbillies are veterans. Your reason #2 is the most likely.
Crazed Vampyress
Well good for your son! its always great to hear young people voice themselves, and i think that says a lot about his parents as well! =)
Msterbeau
I like to watch as kids grow... as they make mental connections between different events and situations, process it, and form an opinion. Good stuff Mark.
gothicmom
I was surprised when my son said they had talked about Veterans Day at school. Well, not completely surprised.
Homicidalheathen
I remember lots of boys taking opening day off with their fathers in my day. It was ok like a sick day or vacation day.
Scary Guy
I can tell you why, veterens day is a stupid holiday. Hunting season actualy makes at least a little bit of sence (the way The Dark put it at least). You can go visit your grandpa after school. Head Wreck
veterans day/armastice day is in no means stupid. and its not just for gramps etc. but veterans of all wars. as said before, the royal british leguion uses this to highlight its charity work and gain funds to help veterans and those affected by war, be it counciling for post traumatic stress, helping the disabled veterans with anything that they may need, or just simple things like allowing old commerades to keep in touch. tbh, i dont want to go through any of that shit, and definatly not the shit my grandfather and great grandfather went through (operation market garden, d-day. and in the case of my great grandfather, the only male left surviving in his town after deployment at the somme, he went to gallipolli and barely came back himself)
torn asunder
please, no offense intended here, but i don't understand why kids should get a day off scholl for veterans day. how is staying home, or going to the mall, or hanging out with their friends showing respect for veterans? now, if there was something like an organized field trip to visit the VA hospital or something, it would make sense to me, that or maybe some kind of celebration/ceremony to honor them. hunting season? feed your family - i get that... veterans day - what do we do!? i love to see more people actively thanking vets for their sacrifices, showing appreciation for the freedoms they have thanks to our military perosnnel, but the fact is, most don't, and wouldn't, even if you did give them the day off. to sum up my opinion - veteran's day, very important. day off? only to pay respects, otherwise, you don't deserve it. If you're doing some activity that relates to Veteran's Day, then by all means. If you're going hunting and you're under 18, you need to be in school and hunt on the weekends. Veteran's Day is stupid? I may have never seen combat or go to Iraq or someplace like that but I did serve. Twice. No offense, SG, but thanks. Thanks a lot. Goth Brooks
So, you think paying tribute to and honoring the Men and women who have fought and died for this country is stupid? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> We have Memorial Day for that, and kids do get a day off for it. Though I don't agree with SG's post, I don't see any reason for anyone except veterans to get Nov 11th off. Although a school field trip to help out at the local VA or go clean the yards/houses of some vets' houses would be a pretty good idea.
Jarodaka
We have Memorial Day for that, and kids do get a day off for it. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Memorial Day is to honor those who died, Veterans' Day is for living veterans. Maybe the best way to honor both would be to have a national holiday on Election Day? (Not in lieu of, but in addition to.) And, woot, go Dark's son! Scary Guy
So, you think paying tribute to and honoring the Men and women who have fought and died for this country is stupid? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Did I stutter? You don't need to agree with my post because no one cares anyway. However yes, make a mandatory field trip, hell combine it with memorial day. In the morning take a field trip and go visit the dead and in the afternoon go visit the close to dead. I think the best way to honor military veterens still here and long gone is to go on with life as if nothing had happened, since that is after all what they fought for, nothing to happen and american life to remain unchanged by forign ideals. If we let it change then the terrorists have won. My grandfater was in the army and fought in the Korean military action and my other grandfather was in the navy. One is retired and the other died back in 89, so both days have a little bit of meaning to me too.
