You read my mind.

I'm just curious as to what it is that upsets our members. Is it the fact that we won't tolerate rudeness? Maybe it's that we won't let people fight like little children on the board. Who knows? I'm unsure as to what our members actually expect our board to be. Does it upset them that we move or delete posts when people break the rules? We're adults here. We can either act like an adult or go to another board where the petty (or not so petty) arguments are acceptable.

I came to this board because it WASN'T like other boards that I had perused. This one was different. I fell in love with the fact that there is a Phee, a Troy, a JaneDead, etc. These are people who are funny, they have something to say, and are always entertaining. These are people who are serious when they need to be, and fun every other time. The list is too long to mention, but I have developed friendships with so many. There are so many more that I'd like to meet. I don't like the fake names, the rudeness, the off-board issues that are brought on here to humiliate others. This is the crap that I'm tired of seeing. These fakes don't make the board interesting, they make it pathetic. Sure, we should all be able to speak our minds, but how about doing it in a more mature way? Why is that so hard?

And no. My post count isn't out of boredom. If I was bored, Zhuk, I would have gotten up and done something else. Like people do when they're bored. My post count is high because I had (see HAD) fun here. Because I can joke with some of our members, and they can joke back. I didn't join this board and post my ass off as a way of becoming popular. I'm just like everyone else-I like to talk to others here. I like knowing that there are people who think like me. I like knowing that I can share my views with the board, and get opinions or feedback if I need help. Many, many of you have been very helpful to me, getting me through some really tough times. And, I thank you. I hope that I've done the same.

Maybe it's the "we" stuff. I know for a fact that 2 of the top 3 people running this place don't agree with certain things other moderators have done here.

Maybe it's the fact that the mods let some people bend rules and not others.

Maybe it's the fact that mods have disciplined people when no actual rule has been broken.

Maybe it's the fact that mods said people with fake screen names are pathetic, yet one of the main people who started this board had a fake screen name. When I privately mentioned that to some of the mods they failed to reply to me.

Maybe it's the fact that I know what was said by certain mods in the moderator forum and not only was alot of stuff non-factual, but just as petty and childish as some of the posts that the mods accused.

I hope you're referring to me. I've asked several times to be removed as a moderator.

No I was reffering to people who are higher up than the moderators.

If you don't want to moderate, why wont they let you quit?

Sounds like a conspiracy!

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Higher up like...Jesus?

or Evel Knievel...maybe?

Not so much boring as more like a clique. That's why I don't post so much anymore, I don't fit in.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Isn't not fitting in part and parcel of being a goth?

+5 Goth points for not fitting in, well played!

I don't always agree with things that go on, either.

If I've ever mistakenly been unfair, I apologize. Nobody's perfect.

I don't know about all that. Got examples?

I don't know about all that, either.

You may be right. I'm just sick of all the calling out, the off-board b.s. being brought here. Maybe I shouldn't be a mod, either. Troy thought that I'd be a good one. He's the boss, or so I thought.

I'm not here to get into the boards "politics", I have enough of that bullshit at the game modding community board I run. I come here to relax, enjoy myself and get to know fellow people who share in the same tastes as myself. The last thing I would call this place, is boring. Quite on the contrary.

One rant I do have is there are little cliques here which seem to ignore the newer people or people who are not in the clique. Something I noticed since I'm a newer member (came here this year) and never met anyone here in person. Maybe I'm mistaken, but that's what I percieve at the moment.

And BTW I refused to vote.

You're not alone in seeing it that way. I guess that's just how it is but what do I know?

Never in my life have I not had to deal with cliques. There are always people that are drawn to other people for one reason or another. It could be location (Ann Arbor vs Royal Oak), it could be club of choice (Mephistos vs. City Club), it could actually be based on post content as some are not comfortable with others posts and thus will not strive to make friendly gestures toward those people.

You will feel the brunt of this especially if you haven't met anyone in person.

But this is the internet, right? Who meets people off the internet? Actually, one of the reasons we are here is to not only reach the internet community but to encourage actual real life social encounters. There are plenty of possibilities to meet other DGN'ers, you just need to take that first step.

I would suggest tomorrow at the Alienare show at The Natural Canvas in Ann Arbor. I think there wll be a decent number of us in attendance.

QUOTE(soothsayer @ Dec 8 2005, 06:51 AM)

Exactly - I would say more but then my thoughts will get censored.

You know, it's exactly this type of thing that makes being a moderator so very discouraging.  You might be surprised how many of us have considered resigning, and we have lost a few already.  I come here after work and find IMs waiting for me complaining aout this and that and some days I've spend literally hours sorting through crap trying to decide what the best thing for the board is.

Some days when people complain about what we do I feel like a punching bag and then I start asking myself why I even care enough to spend time trying to help out here.

Then I remember the friends I've made and how nice Troy has always been to me.

I see what goes on behind the scenes.  Nothing is ever moved or deleted without a lot of thought and discussion, and sometimes we may make a mistake, but overall I do think we do a good job of keeping the spam down and putting posts in the right place so there is some sort of organization.

Can you suggest ways for us to do a better job?  If you have suggestions I would be happy to hear them, and I am quite sure the other moderators would also.

Take a look around the net.  There are a lot of spam-filled type of boards out there filled to the brim with infighting.  Is that what you really truly want to happen to this board?

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I remember a time on Dgn When (yes even in my short year here there is a time when) we all plainly stated our opinions with out attacking others openly or slyly etc... And they were not moderated. I saw allot of conflicting views and none were abusive and these were let alone. So it is obvious to me we are free to express our views and such as long as we can behave as adults. I think it was when some members started to behave as children that the mod team started to crack down on us as such. If we want an open board where we can be free then the mod team will have to put the smack down on us when we the members get out of line. I am sure if we all could get a grip with reality here and learn to behave DGN would go back to the care free place it once was.

ONYX and other Mods Thank you for keeping the CRAP Out of here, You have done a stellar Job and i think it might be time for the members to cut the crap if they want DGN to fun and exciting!

oh i have noticed the cliques develope over the almost one year i have been here. And basiclly that is what i am referring to when i stated the clique part in my first post. I have no problem with IRL close friendships, but when those friendships come to the board and (kowningly or unkowningly) ignore fellow memebrs and newbies, it does not create a welcoming atmosphere that would draw a newbie or even a less social memebr out to meet people. If i was on the net and i felt unwelcomed why would i bother to venture out to a IRL social event to meet these people who dont even want to bother with me online?

what, you mean we can't agree to disagree!? are we the borg or something!? disagreements are the entire reason we have staff chat areas, so we can discuss and mutually agree on a course of action, as a moderator *team*, on any given situation...

Maybe it's the fact that the mods let some people bend rules and not others.

mods always try to be fair - each case is an individual situation, and gets individual consideration, and therefore, there can be variation. moderating isn't an exact science.

Maybe it's the fact that mods have disciplined people when no actual rule has been broken.

last i checked, mods are human - mistakes can be made, but when they are, you can count on the fact that the action was taken with the best intentions...

Maybe it's the fact that mods said people with fake screen names are pathetic, yet one of the main people who started this board had a fake screen name.  When I privately mentioned that to some of the mods they failed to reply to me.

i'm happy to reply to you, because i know exactly what you're talking about - the issue wasn't/isn't fake screen names (because i'm fairly sure your birth cert. doesn't say "blackmail" on it. the issue is people hiding behind fake screen names to blantently, intentionally, verbally abuse other members with the inent of hurting them. the "fake" screen name to which you refer was always used as a tool of humor, an abbott, if you will, to the costello of the individual's "real" online persona. it's not the name, it's the childish bullshit people do while hiding behind it that's the problem.

Maybe it's the fact that I know what was said by certain mods in the moderator forum and not only was alot of stuff non-factual, but just as petty and childish as some of the posts that the mods accused.

first, as far as i'm concerned, you shouldn't know what goes on in the staff chat area, and imo, whoever is discussing it with non-mods shouldn't be a mod anymore. (again, only my opinion) second, the staff chat areas are *private*, which follows the rule of keeping drama/personal issues off the (public) board. as mods, we must discuss our thoughts regarding issues, and in so doing, we will be open about our thoughts, and we may have disagreements. still, to be honest, what mods say in staff chat is nobody's business but the other mods.

if you have any issues you'd like to discuss with me personally, pm me...
