Bush finally admits he was wrong

Recommended Posts

President Bush today accepted responsibility for going to war in Iraq based on faulty intelligence. "It is true that much of the intelligence turned out to be wrong. As president I am responsible for the decision to go into Iraq," the president said. Bush also called Thursday's elections in Iraq a "watershed moment in the story of freedom."

Not to rain on your parade...

He said he was responsible for the decision... and he said the Intel was wrong... He never said he was wrong. A good decision made on bad intel is still a good decision.

Agreed, if the war was anyones fualt, it was the Intel people. The president is responsible for acting on the Intel, but not creating it or doing their jobs.

I'm not sure if I can agree with this. It certainly doesn't hold up on an individual level.

Take the following scenario, for example. My friend Percy walks up to me with a huge, ugly, black eye. I ask him what the hell happened, and he tells me that Victor punched him. So, angry that my friend has a black and determined that it should not happen again, I go and kill Victor, as a preemptive effort to ensure that he gives no one else black eyes, particularly Victor. A little later, I found out that it wasn't Victor who punched Percy. I'm still responsible for killing Victor, and would be even if Percy had been accurate.

Yes, and additionally, you aren't under the misguided belief that by killing Victor, you're spreading democracy to all of Victor's friends either...

There has been a spread of democratic reforms in the middle east post-war, Syria is out of Lebanon and Libya is now complying with UNSCUM. 80% of Shiites polled last week feel good about their future according to ABC news ahead of an election this week (elections = democracy).

I hope for all of our sakes that you're right! I guess only time will tell. It'll be interesting to look back on this in 40 years...

I hope I am right too. At this point I would say the war was a bad idea but still has the potential to be a good thing in the long run.

I saw that on local 4 news. Bush said he was responsible for going to war in Iraq based on the faulty intelligence. He pretty much was saying he fucked up and he almost had to admit to this becasue his approval rating has been at an all time low for months. He very well could have done this to perhaps boost some support for his administration.

Anyway I do have high hopes for the Iraq election and see this as a positive turn around for both America and middle eastern countries. It sure took long enough, but of course I know it was a difficult thing to have take place in such a violent area of the world.

See the thing is, I can see both sides of the Iraq war issue.

However it seems to me that no one can defend some of the Bush mistakes.

Go to war, fine, like I said, I can see why (my opinion was that Saddam violated over 20 UN sanctions and was never going to stop). Madeline Albright and Bill freaking Clinton and Al Gore all said that Saddam needed to be removed. John Kerry and Sen. H. Clinton voted in favor of the war.

But it's obvious Rumsfeld didn't send enough troops. The post-war strategy seems awful. I sort of understand why Haliburton won the contracts they did, they are one of the only corporations large enough to handle this sort of job - but it just looks bad. And Haliburton overcharged the U.S. and did other shady things. I just think some of the contracts handed over were shady.

Also Bush sounds like a robot when talking about the war. I miss good speakers like Clinton and Reagan who could clearly articulate why certain things were done. I could do a better job at giving speeches than GWB.
