Not exactly "new" to me, intellectually speaking, but this was the year I finally sat and listened to some Tiny Tim.

This was also the year I discovered the German-language recordings of Europe's favourite pop-punk, Nina Hagen.

Also the first year in a decade I listened to The Doors and Velvent Underground/Nico (solo). I can't figure why, for the life of me, but turning into a music snob kind of drove me to not-listening to musicians that are essentially the reason music snobs have something to listen to these days.

Psyclon Nine finally grabbed a hold of me this year with INRI. Fucking great album!

Solitary Experiments and Rotersand did the best albums of their career this year, too.

Combichrist has been around since 2003, but this change of sound into more technoid EBM was a very good idea, since I like Everybody Hates You more than The Joy of Gunz, which was way more noisy and less catchy.

Reaper's first EP (Vasi Vallis from Namnambulu/Frozen Plasma) was pretty good, too, even if one of his songs sounds a bit too much like Combichrist - "Blut Royale" (heheh).

Heimataerde's debut album was just beyond cool with the bagpipes and medieval influences in what is basically "terror EBM".

Virtual Embrace grabbed my attention this year with their Hellektro album, if for no other reason, because it's all club friendly and pretty well executed... even if it all starts sounding the same after about track seven. Still, it's not bad, just not what I'd say is home listening material.

I've been a bad little goth this year.

And now for Ken's (Not So) SUPER (Not So) SPECIAL New Bands of the Year

Number 3: And One

At the beginning of this year, I fell in love with a band where the only songs that I'd heard seemed very goofy and gimmicky. I think I've been different from most fans of the band in that I absolutely fell in love with the "Aggressor" album, where many seemed to say that it was their weakest. Either way..."Krieger" and "Speicherbar" were just fantastic songs...love the harmonies and the melodies...and it's been in and out of my CD player VERY regularly. Love it.

Number 2: Within Temptation

I remember the first time I put in "The Silent Force" CD...and I remember laughing at how over the top some of their music seemed to me at first. But the deeper I got into the CD...the more I realized how much I truly loved the theatrics. "Pale" is just awesome...really...I like the whole CD. On the second runthrough, I felt stupid for laughing the first time.

Number 1: Muse

Call me stupid. Call me a fanboy, whatever...I had never heard this band...and came to find that they were somewhat of an "indie poster boy" kind of band. I really could care less. The "Origin of Symmetry" album is freaking awesome. All of their stuff is very very well done. I haven't heard a lot of music "with so much music" in it in a very long time. Everyone is STILL annoyed that I listen to them as much as I do.

Honorable Mention: The Silence Noise

I'm such a self promoting, self-absorbed loser...right? Right? How could you mention your own band? What's WRONG with you man? This past year has led to discoveries and new songs that I never would have thought possible. I'm not completely in love with our music...and in a way I never want to adore it...if you adore your music, better realize damn quickly that you're not seeing what's wrong with it... But I feel this year has been the most complete year of music, and I'm truly looking forward to getting it out in the world this year...whether people like it or not.
