Need Food, Heat, Furniture....

Hi folks.

Last week I accidently stumbled onto an ad in Craig's List - where a woman has pleaded with anyone for help with her situation.

Today I spoke with her over the phone. Without knowing all the details, here is the gist of it:

She just moved here to MI (Westland).

Her husband just died.

She's taking care of her 60 something year old mother.

They have no income, and cant get state help, she is looking for work but has not found a job yet.

The heat was just turned off.

She has about a hundred bucks left.

She's got 3 kids.

No furniture.

And almost no food left.

She needs basically - everything and anything.

Christmas is next week. Some of us will bitch and say its a wasted commercial farce. But we'll probably bitch inside of a warm home with a full stomach. She and her kids will have neither.

I'm broke. Just got a new job.

But I can dig up at least 40 bucks.

40 bucks times 20 people is 800 bucks. Fuck it man, 20 bucks times 20 people is 400 Bucks. That will buy food, and gas at least. And blankets and long johns for her kids. I'm also digging thru my garage to see if we have any left over furniture of any sort. A chair here, an old coffee table there, maybe a sleeping bag, some patio furniture here, an old mattress there...you get it. I'm even looking thru my old camping gear.

Dont know if any of you can help.

And honestly - I dont know this lady. But I think the need is legit.

If you want to help, and have anything at all to give, including things from your food pantry, i will pick up the stuff in my truck and take it to her. You can call me in the evenings at home at 734 266 2123, and I can give you her contact information. Thanks.

Steven

Um, if she has kids the state cannot turn off her heat, AND and elderly person.  She should get assistance.  Becareful Steve, you are a caring person, but tis the season for scams!

I know it is (scam season) and I'm taking a hard look at it. Shes in process of trying to get help thru the state. She's brand new here in MI. I have not offerred her any $$$ (I dont really have any) but when I offerred her some hand me downs and left over food she jumped at it. Especially the food. These things are always risky scam wise. I have a feeling that her husband used to take care of everything and now that he's dead shes sort of lost. But my intention overall is to just get her a push - some short term security while she works out the rest.

If I get burned really what have I lost? Some coin? A couple of sleeping bags and some lawn chairs and canned goods? Nothing really.

But if she's legit... she's got kids man, and its cold.

Steven, contact Fox2 troubleshooters. They can get her heat back on and help push to get her assistance. With an elderly person and kids in the home, DTE should not be turning off her heat unless they are unaware of the whole situation. But Fox2 will do alot to help her out. They know who to contact. Wish I could help more but being that I am living with friends after losing a job, a house and a car, my help is limited.

go to a catholic church .. crazy but they give free food away all the time.. or any church for that matter.. and the state should not be shutting off her heat and all. tell her to push her way through FIA ( state help and all) it takes a long ass time and is really hard to get assistance but it does come through . .you just have to go through hell and back.. also bill spencer from channel 7 does what fox 2 problem solvers do .. there is a number out there ill look it up on the web.. how old are her kids? I think i migh thave a few left over things from my nephew ( if they are around 3? ) if not I got some canned food and mabey a blanket or to ( they hare kinda bad but I can sew them up ) PM me to let me know what is up

i wonder if she is new to michigan (how new?) that her heat would be turned off already?? we just had a pretty HEFTY bill and were not shut off so i wonder what her bill must be??

if it is legit i have stuff like dishes, a desk in my garage not being used, extra blankets, hand me down toys/clothes (depending on her kids ages of course)

honestly, i can't offer money - have none of that to give or food. but i do have extra stuff if need be. not sure she would need what i have to give though.

  • 2 weeks later...

C.O.T.S. in Detroit is where I give anything and everything I don't want or need. You see the ones who need you right in your face. they unload your car and thank you with huge smiles on. Most of them flock to the door to see who it is and what they brought this time.

Yeah, you get to write it off your taxes but you also get toadd it on your Karma and get your heartstrings tugged on.

It's a fabulous feeling..I recommend it to everyone.
