Detroit sucks

Recommended Posts

Anyone have any good suggestions on stuff to do besides bars?

The art district sucks. They closed parts of the DIA due to lack of funds.....but I am going to go see that new sculpture exhibit soon......

Plays come into town......

Anyone got anything they can suggest to do that is different, preferrably at night?

Oh and Andiamo's on 14ml Rd has a show room, it is good.

After living 3-1/2 years in hicksville 30 miles from Raleigh, NC where art/culture/nightlife is scarce at best and everything shuts down early (after-hours bars are non-existent), I find it hilarious & eye-rolling that people can say that about Detroit.

Bars of all different types. Live music. DJ music. Acoustic music. Karaoke. Christian-based hangouts. Non-smoking hangouts. Libraries. Concert halls. Opera. Symphony. Coffee houses on every freaking corner. Galleries galore. Malls. Spoken word performances. Poetry readings. Movie theaters. Art movie houses. Study/discussion groups. A good friend's living room floor, wine & a board game.

I could go on. You just have to truly look at your interests to see what might be out there to feed your need.

This, my dear, happens to be my specialty. The same sentiment has been travelling around my group of friends - though they don't really go to clubs, we all go to alot of parties, drink too much, and stay up too late. We're old. We're tired. It's time to change this up a bit.

So....

I'm now the Cruise Director and we actually do stuff that DOESN'T get us wasted and make us green the next morning (well, sometimes...) Here are some websites:

http://www.theworldiscoming.com/home.html - since the city is doing alot of prepping for the Super Bowl there is actually a TON of fun stuff going on.

And the MetroParks in the area always have stuff going on too. In the summer, the Detroit Symphony Orchestra even plays at them. I mean, when else will you see the DSO for a whopping $4 entry fee, right? So, check out the MetroParks websites, they've got fun stuff in the winter, too.

And, last summer, I managed to make it to about a dozen festivals and special events that just sounded cool. The Sheep and Wool festival? Yup. The Bus races downriver? Yup. The festival near Lansing with the bull riding? Yup.

Even if these are things that on the surface don't sound interesting (and let's be honest, Sheep and Wool festival only gets the REAL pervies excited), but once you get there, they are SO much fun, and even if it's something that you will NEVER go to again, it's still a pretty interesting time. It's nice to take yourself out of your environment, y'know?

Like you said, you're here, so make the most of it!

HH - Your New Year's plans sound fun! If I come across any other good websites, I'll post them or send them your way. You live near Port Huron? I'm in the Metro Detroit area, but still, sometimes I see events for out that way. The tough part, really, in all of this "expanding your horizons" thing is finding some partners in crime! My friends would have sooner given me their organs than given up a night at the bar, the freaking lushes, but they're starting to come around to thinking that MAYBE, just MAYBE, and whoa, what a long shot, getting shitfaced every weekend IS NOT the best use of their time. Then again, sometimes it is :)

Cheers!

your complaining!?!?!?!?!

all i got round here is a creche full of teens who think its cool to cut themselves and wearband tees and smelly shirts reminiscent of the grunge era (which i didnt take to, i was in suits long jacketed suits with oversized sleved shirts and tie while everyone was doing that).

the music is the same every night, you can set your watch by it. and it tends to be anything thats on kerrang (owned byu smash hits marketed for the generation of kids that doesnt listen to britney spears), so its guaranteed to be stuff like slipknot, linkin park, or any Scr-eemo (deffo not my scene). the drinks are out of a bottle, (beer only or alcopops) and unlike my beloved zone (club that got shut down that i do miss) theres no where to escape a speaker cab, nor any couches to sip a mexicana and watch prety women in regency dress, corsetry, or latex go by.

you lot got it better than most of thr UK.

you'll miss it when it goes. trust me i felt that way about my scene till it went downhill and got comercialised.
