Hairstyle Suggestions for New Year's

Recommended Posts

Ugh. After attempting to do my hair for Christmas and failing miserably, I think I'm going to need help for NYE.

In my current avatar pic, taken on NYE 2001/2002, my hair was long, and spiral-permed. I had it up in a bun in back, with lots of tendrils hanging down the front sides, no bangs. It was an easy 'do, and I liked how it looked:

When not at CC, I've been flatironing my hair, and sorta bunching it up a little with some light hairspray. But it gives me a sort of Courtney Love look, and I don't want that for "dress-up" occasions. I attempted a simple flatironed look for Christmas, and about cried 'cause it was so unattractive. My hair's just too "in-between" in it's growth to have much style without lots of work it seems.

The general consensus from people who have seen me with it crimped at CC is that it looks best that way, and I agree. Jon thinks it looks really good crimped, too. So I'm thinking of crimping it and styling it similar to the way I had it in the pictures above. I picked up a nice hair doo-dad that matches my new jewelry.

But I wonder if you have a better idea? I really can't go to the expense of having it done at a salon. And when I've done that anyway, I usually am NOT happy with what I walk out with.

Ideas? ANY?

How about leaving it down and curling sections into spirals?  That might look nice.  You have a very pretty face btw!

I think i might agree with this, i might suggest soft lucious medium to large curls not to tight to frame the face...... Try using a 3 inch Iron if that not enough curl try a 2 1/2 inch iron with a small up do in back with trendrials curled a bit smaller falling out of that neatly in the back.... I think it would depend on the out fit and jewlry too, what effect you are trying to achive, are you going for sophisticated or Naughty etc.....

I cant imagine you looking less then gorgeous in what ever you choose :wink

Although I think your hair is beautiful the way it is......Here is an idea?

I tend to go a bit over board, and concider that if you were to do something so drastic, you would have to keep having it doing to prevent awful roots......

But highlights, low lights, and reds for you.

You have such beautiful skin and natural hair color - plus it is so curley! Most women would love to have hair like that.

I can't get the pics to download. Can you give me a URL perhaps?

Also, maybe I made myself unclear. While I VERY much appreciate your compliment, that was my hair 4 years ago, spiral permed. My hair has been unpermed for years now, and I've been growing it out to 1 length for about 2 years. My hair grows very slow, so I'm still layered a bit.

My hair in it's natural state is pretty straight, with HORRIBLE cowlicks at the bang area that, if parted down the center, SWOOOOOOOP up and then back down in horrible upside-down U's. Flatironing it helps a bit. And once it's grown out to the length I want (mid-back), I'm sure those swoops will create nice waves. But for now, they're just goofy looking.

Also, my hair is baby-fine and sparse. That's why spiral perms & crimping helps me so much - gives me mucho body. But fine hair like mine does NOT "updo" easily. A bun on me is more like a mini-muffin. And I will never be able to fill out a snood. Heck, just a ponytail requires almost triple-looping a small pony holder.

Thus my requesting others for help.

As far as colour, I was recently considering going with a drastic all-over red variation of layers, from a dark magenta or burgundy to a very punk pillarbox red. That sorta fell through and I've decided to stick with what I've got now for a while - my natural blonde on top, with a black permanent layer underneath. There was a layer of vermillion on top of the black, but that was a semi-permanent and it's washed out by now. Not in a hurry to put it back in. The black is staying in nicely, though. My blonde in those pics was totally natural, just an ultra-slight lightening from perm solution. Right now, I have a somewhat bleached area on top from trying to rid myself of a bad dye job over 8 months ago.

Thanks for the suggestions, though. And if you can find another way to get me those pics, please do.

Regarding the spiral curls thing, I actually did that, with great results, years ago. But the effect on me with my face is very Shirley Temple-like. Cute, but I'm definitely not going for cute. My hair in those pictures is sorta classically elegant. This year, I'm going for punk elegant. I'm picturing some kind of spiky updo.

I think I might have to look up some pics online, take them to Great Clips and see what they'd charge me to do something with it. Money is tight this particular holiday, so I didn't want to spend the extra $$. But I might be in the mood to pamper myself for a change.

Thanks, Ginevra. No cut or color happening here - just an updo.

I'm browsing some of my favorite hairdo sites. Finding a few possibilities. Right now, I'm the most nuts over this one:

Got a few others that might give an idea of what I'm going for. I'll upload and share.

Once i read punky elelgant i thought of do similar to this one....... I love the Braided look close to the scalp, and i love the fuller amount of individual spikes, I do not how ever like the braids that hang down so i might suggest leaving those part un braided and pretty much in there natural state. I defiantly think, if you think it is flattering on you, that you should leave a few pieces to hang and frame the face. I think i would also consider since you ahve the two layers of color that contrast nicley, how that would look and play with the doo a bit to get a nices even look in regard to where the color lays.

BTW in all honestly you are very pretty not only in looks but personality, and i think no matter what you do with your hair that those things wil shine though to creat one hell of a night for you. I hope it is, since it is your first back here in for ever ya know, should be the most special and if you decided to pamper your self a bit i think it would be well deserved.

OOOps.....I can do things on my work pc that I still can't figure out on my new home pc???????

To get this kind of body in the back, you would want to use a large barrel curling iron and hair spray sections and curl at the scalp and up and outwards...layer by layer until you get to about middle of back of head....then tousle hair upside down and hair spray and tousel at the roots only.....I also use a round fine bristle brush and kind of rat it at the roots. An aerosal spray works best I find....not too much as it adds weight. Flatten and straiten the ends.

I love doing hair. I am a hair whore. I always wanted to go to coz school...but I can't afford to leave my job to do it.

I LOVE this one!

I have no advice because I am clueless about hair, especially mine. Good luck!

Get a hairpiece from Sally or the drugstore. Pull your hair back into a small, tight bun and add the hair scrunchie. Secure the faux hair with small bob pins. also, you can add some longer pieces by buying a hank of yakki hair and rubberbanding a few locks to the securing bob pins for added interest. You have a lovely blonde shade that should not be hard to match. The hair add-ons/scrunchies are around $7-15 so not too bad cost wise.

Do some intense upswept cat-eye eyeshadow and a shiney neutral mouth for NYE va-voom :)

Wow, Kelly. That's cool. I really don't want to mess with my color right now, but that does give me thought.

How good are you with hair? Wanna make $20? I think that's what Great Clips charges. :grin

Lilith - at first, I really liked the braids in that 'do. But now that I've looked at it harder, I do think it would be nicer with just some pieces left hanging in that way, but unbraided. And I do much, much prefer myself with some face-framing bits like I've got in my original pictures above. So no matter which style I decide on, something will be left down in front around my face. Makes the roundness more narrow.

That said, besides the 2 pictures shown above, here are the rest of the styles I"m considering. I'd love to hear people's favorites. Remember the two pics above, and remember I will have some pulled down around my face, too.

The braids just seemed Hard to me not soft and elegant... I see elelgance with a bit of softenss in it.

In the new set of pics, i like the top left one with the yellow background, ultra sultry n sexy, perhaps mix in some spikes instead of the swirls at the crown.

LOl i cant do hair for shit but i love debating on how to create the best do for an occasion...... just throwing down ideas n such ya know......

Actually, that's kinda what I pictured when I first envisioned a 'do for the occasion. Spikiness uptop with a decent amount down around my face.

I'm in the same boat. I have "happy accidents" that sometimes look good, and I've become expert at crimping (there is a certain art to it...). But for the most part, I need help for an updo.

And I also love the debate/suggesting/input over this sort of thing. The kind of "girlie talk" I've missed out on for years. =)
