Party Monster

Has anyone seen this movie? For months people have been bugging me to watch it and my roommate finally got me to see it. It was incredible.

It is the story of James St. James the original club kid in the 80s and his friend Michael Alec (I think that is how you spell his name). The soundtrack is incredible and the acting is amazing.

I never would have imagined that Macualy Caulkin (is that how you spell it?) was really talented!

Anyway, check it out if you want some great entertainment. It has a lot of famous people in it surprisingly...

I just got done reading the book it was based off of. MUCH BETTER!!!

But the movie was very well done, I thought. Seth Green did an amazing job as James St. James and Mr. Caulkin blew me away as Michael Alig. I didn't initially recognize Marilyn Manson as Christina, tho. He did a good job as the psychotic drag queen.

The thing I loved the most about the movie was the sheer pageantry of the whole thing...the costuming, the make-up, the hair....it was all amazing. I did a little research about it and found out that Kabuki was the key make up designer and Richie Rich was one of the costumers (Kabuki & Richie Rich were 2 of the Club Kids).

The book took the story in a bit of a different direction...while the movie was fairly faithful to the book for what was in the movie (not all, but most) the book had a lot....more, I suppose. It didn't seem to be as much about the actual murder itself as much as the effect that Michael Alig had on the post-Warholian club scene of NY and how the murder helped "kill" (along with the rise of techno and raves) the subculture that Alig spawned. A look at how both the subculture and the social network that were the Club Kids fabulously self-destructed through excess and lack of controls.

If you enjoyed the movie, I highly recommend picking up the book. It's been reprinted under the title of "Party Monster" but you may be able to find it at a library as "Disco Bloodbath" as well.

  • 2 weeks later...

I saw this movie for the first time a couple of weeks ago. I didn't know that it was based on a true story/book. That's pretty cool. I'll need to watch it again, maybe I'll get a different feel for it. I did kinda like it though. First, I do kinda have a liking for "drug" movies. Not the straight out funny ones though. But I did really like the costumes in it they were very impressive. The way I heard of this movie was when I saw Manson on Jay Leno, I think. And he talked about it. He said that he'd never smoked a cigarette prior to the movie and his character smoked. So the now older Mr. Caulkin took him to a near by gas station and bought him his first pack of cigarettes. I loved that story. I think it's the funniest thing. Kevin McCallister (played by Macaulay Culkin) buying Marilyn Manson his first pack of cigarettes. LOL

But, yeah, I liked the movie. The 'gay' accent thing got to me at first too. I also love the "greetings citizens..." song. Oh, it's great
