and suddenly, a promotion

Recommended Posts

My boss called a meeting on thursday to tell us all that a woman named Alice (introduces Alice) from the George S. May Foundation would be interviewing us all for an efficiency consultation. The short lady gave us all papers to fill out, with questions such as "What do you feel is the primary organization governing your place of work?" and the like.

I work in this tiny little art store, there are about seven people who work there, plus me, plus the accountant. My big boss, René, is the owner. She's the one who delegates responsibilities. There are two managers: Greg, who works upstairs in the frame shop, and Mel, who works downstairs in the paint/retail section. Third level of command is me. I'm the "saturday supervisor." Basically, on Saturdays, I'm in charge of the downstairs, because Mel is off that day. This creates a problem during the week, because I have to try to balance being not in charge, with retaining some level of supervisor respect. All in all, it's really difficult because it just creates a power struggle between me and Mel. Where the struggle comes in is here: Mel doesn't like the other employees, and is constantly telling them that they are stupid and lazy, so they prefer to listen to me, which technically, isn't what they should do. Also, Mel keeps saying she wants to quit to become a counter girl at a tattoo shop.

So of course, when it was my turn to explain what my job is, and who my bosses are, Alice got really confused, and asked me about it for about an hour. I also had a lot to say about how the pay scale is unfair and biased toward certain employees who happen to have mothers who are friends with the owner, who are lazy, and I gave several examples of one certain person... i almost felt bad about that one. Also, the owner is extremely moody and hard to approach about anything important. it's like a mine field. Anyway, I had a lot to say about a lot of things. As did many of us.

The following day, after Alice had finished interviewing everyone at our store, and the even tinier store which is located in Wasilla, she basically cornered René and told her that the store was so disorganized because of her, because of the way she led her staff, and because there were too many managers.

Ha.

René cried a lot, then pulled Mel into her office for a few hours to talk.

Next day, Saturday, René called us all into her office one at a time. I got to be last, and expected some kind of a speech along the lines of "how dare you say such awful things about me, you're fired." Much to my surprise though, it was quite the opposite.

She actually told me "Okay, so I'm making Mel my personal assistant, so she's not under so much stress anymore, which means that, if you'll accept the position, I want you to be my new downstairs manager. I think you're more than qualified. Please say yes."

SWEET!

So now, I'm the manager of an art store. And I even got to set my own pay rate, which is pretty damn good, and I get two weeks paid vacation, and all these other great things to go with the shitty customers I'll have to deal with every day.

After having my car broken into last week, which means I have no heat because the dash is busted, and a nice five degree breeze going through the car at all times, and no tunes, this almost makes up for it, for now.

Anyway, yay for me.

Maybe now you can get your car fixed sooner

well, that's still debatable. it should have been fixed last week, as we should have recieved scott's check from the school already... but for some reason it's lost in mail land. (yet another pain in the neck)

so, with my next check going towards rent... i see maybe the middle of next month as a more realistic time for window fixing. but hey, at least it's before summer. :ermm:
