Toledo shopping - I hear good things

Recommended Posts

A clerk at HT in Southland told me they recently opened up a brand-new Torrid store at a mall in Toledo, Ohio. She said it's beautiful. There is already a Hot Topic there.

And Detroit Requiem mentions a good thrift store down there in my "SCORE" thread in this forum.

I am aware there are at least two Deb shops down there, and they do have plus sizes.

Depending on where you live, it's a better bang-for-your-buck where gas in the car is concerned than going to Great Lakes Crossing or Somerset in Sterling Heights. Especially if you wear plus sizes.

The mall I went to with a Torrid is in Sterling Heights, so it must not have been Somerset. Whichever the big mall in SH is is the one I should have referred to.

The Torrid is in the Franklin Park mall.

As far as anything "special" about those stores, I've found they've got a good selection of "mainstream goth/punk" clothes available, short of going online, making your own or thrift stores.

I've got clothes I picked up at Lane Bryant 10+ years ago I still wear that are among my "gothiest" or "punkiest".

It's all in what you find, and how you use your imagination.

The outfit I wore to CC last weekend consisted of the corset I bought on eBay from AEE, a red striped blouse with fishnet sleeves - $4.00 clearance at Family Dollar in NC (they have them in MI too - abundantly), a skirt from the regular-sized side of a local Deb store, tights from online, rhumba panties I made myself from a pair of Wal-Mart control panties with Wal-Mart lace sewn on (their selection of deep red lace put Joanne's to shame), and platform ankle boots I picked up from - and I'm not making this up - Rugged Wearhouse in NC for $4.00 on clearance (and bought every other pair they had and sold them on eBay).

Usually, I find a piece here, a piece there. So it's really nice to have a good number of those kinds of stores in one city, rather than having to shop at Deb in Southgate, then drive 50 miles 1-way to Auburn Hills to see if Torrid has something, etc.

Sterling Heights would be Lakeside, I believe. I used to live out in New Baltimore. Our nearest mall was Lakeside ... followed by Great Lakes Crossing, both down M-59, GLC being just off M-59 and I-75.

There was a Torrid in Lakeside.

having spent quite a bit of time in toledo I will have to agree with Bellemorte.... The only good things about toledo were:

1. The Galaxy diner (long since closed)

2. Frankies back when Drivetrain was the DJ (he introduced me to Rave and Industrial type music in 1993)

3. The Fountains and underground in the 5/3 complex

4. parties/raves in abandoned supermarkets

5. going to the old quarries to swim after the bar (not a good idea drunk)

... have not done any of that in 12 years or so... so I dont know if any of it is still around.

The shed (head shops) were pretty cool... as well as some of the book stores out on Reynolds... but as a whole Toledo was pretty boring...(to be nice)

Just so you know, I wasn't advocating Toledo for hanging out, partying, clubbing, or as some mecca of all things Goth. :wink

However, particularly for plus-sized shoppers, now that they've added a Torrid, a lot of stores that us SE Michiganders currently may have to travel upwards of 50 miles in-between are all in one, convenient place.

Particularly nice for us downriver, south and west siders.

one thing about hot topic, each store will be very different depending on the local scene. This is due to their business model which give more control to the store manager when it comes to spotting trends and ordering stock. This could be a problem if you are expecting them to be catering to "Detroit Goths", when they are actually catering to "whatever Toledo has".

as a side note, Fort Meigs is pretty cool <smile>

Thinking back, there used to be coconut records and a camelot records there... they were pretty good.

I did like franklin park mall too (they had a good arcade)... but that was a long time ago.

By far the best thing about Toledo was DR. SHOCK and his X-Ray Chiller THeatre!!!!!

other horror hosts (there were a lot of underground ones in ohio) http://www.cinemawasteland.com/cinemashow/horrorhost.html
