What do you have under the hood?

Recommended Posts

I'm curious as to the computer everyone is running. Just being nosy. :)

I switch between a 2.4GHz P4-M, 1GB, 32MB Mobility Radeon 7500, Dell Latitude Laptop and my custom-built, aluminum case, 512 MB, 64 MB GeForce 3, 2.0 GHz Athlon XP... something... wow, I haven't played PC games in a long time.

I really want a Mac Mini! First I have to get a ReplayTV, though.

Apple G3 powerbook

566 MHZ (that sounds slow but remember, Apple processors work differently than PC's so it's not as slow as it may sound.)

512 MB ram (I run pro tools with 12 tracks running before anything starts to get crazy)

30 GB HD

DVD drive (I have a firewire CD-RW drive)

I added a wireless networking/internet card.

While it's a G3 I think you'll find it's still a pretty powerful laptop, Depeche Mode used the same computer to record their demo's for "Exciter" in 2001.

Like Jarod I want a mac mini and will probably get one in the next couple of months.

This is what we had been using from 2000 through this past Friday: an HP Pavilion 6635, 233 mhz Celeron processor (PIII), 64 mb RAM (you read that right), Yamaha 16/10/40 CDRW.

This is what we were going to get.

When we got to the store and looked around, we ended up bringing home a refurbished (off-lease) emachines T2858 with an 2800+ AMD Athlon XP Processor, an 80GB hard drive, 512 MB DDR SDRAM, 48x Max Write CDRW/DVD Combo Drive, 8 in 1 media reader (much improved over our USB-connected single Smart Media reader), Windows XP Home, yadda yadda yadda.

Benefits: It had twice the RAM, a DVD (Not just CDRW), the combo drive, an installed operating system, some really nice front connections, ready to use. Drawbacks: small case that's hard to get inside for upgrades, 3 month manufacturer's warranty vs. 1-year TigerDirect warranty.

We are kinda your typical "buy a ready-made system and just get a whole new one rather than upgrade" type of home-computer users. And we're not into a lot of the things that would require a lot more add-ons. This will already be such a blast into light-speed vs. the HP we were using, it's more than adequate for us.

I was a bit reluctant to go with the emachines brand, as it's always struck me as a sort of "K-Mart vs. Saks Fifth Avenue" type of bargain-basement brand. But nobody liked HP's, and that little guy serviced us for almost 5 years without a single, solitary problem.

Yeah one year warranties suck.. And word of advice don't waste money on a hard drive with a 1 year warranty..

I've changed my mind on the case I'm getting, I've decided to go with this one instead-

http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc....-133-128&depa=1

Just a different color..

I'll probably be ordering this stuff tonight or tomorrow..

Not sure what I'm doing with my current PC, I'll probably e-bay it so I can buy a 20" Widescreen LCD from Dell.

I'm not teh n3rd.. Lol.

You'll really think I'm a nerd when you see my water-bong cooling system I'm making for the new PC.. YOu basically use a long pipe (most use PVC, I'm trying to find a clear 3" x 4' pipe), a T connector or two, a shower head or some kind of sprayer that sprays a fine mist, a couple of fans.. Basically the misting of the water and cooling it with fans makes for a very efficient way to cool the CPU and Graphics Card..

Only drawback is that you have to add water to it every now and then, where your closed cooling systems generally never need water added.. If I could afford it I would buy one of those water coolers that actually takes the water temp down to about 20 degrees, but those run about 250 bucks and I see no reason to overclock THAT much..

Pentium processors are not all they're hyped up to be.. The AMD Athlon 64 90nm Winchester Core socket 939 2.2 ghz processor is better than any pentium out there. Gigahertz isn't the factor that matters.. It's the 90nm process that sticks it to the Pentium processors..
