Store Brands Foods

:devil Over the years I found that store brand foods are actually worth it compared to the national brands, except beer. I know some people that are egotistic on national brands but not me. There are few national brands that i will buy, but there are a few store brands that I won't buy.

My Opinion: If the product tastes just as good as the national and cost less then I will buy it. But damn what ever happened to Generic beer, cause I remember when they sold it awhile ago and on the label it just said BEER. It tasted nasty anyway, don't miss it. L.O.L!!!!

There are some definate differences sometimes between store and name brands. I've found quite frequently, if I buy corn from Meijer, there's far more chance that I'll find a pebble or a piece of cob in it than if I buy Green Giant Nibblets. Tissue paper and paper towels are a couple of the items I won't skimp on as well as my hair conditioner unless the ingredients are *exactly* the same.

So, it's a trial and error sort of things. Some things I don't mind store brand and others, well, just no.

my little brother and I were talking about this earlier, we both love quite a few store brand things soo much more than the name brand. it's not because of our budget, it's because some things are just 10x better, like our complete love of meijer brand ice cream, there are a few things that I prefer to be name brand, like my soaps and definatly my shampoo but I'm not very picky about anything else.

I have found that the Meijer brand of Au Gratin potatoes are great. Same with their hash browns and cheese. I also have found parts of the cob in cans of store brand veggies, even part of the stalk in green beans. However, I have had that happen in brand name stuff too, esapecially in the small cans named lifelike I think. The name is something like that.

I'll buy anything in a store brand if the budget calls for it ... except cheese. Nothing beats Kraft cheese. ... I'm a cheese snob. lol.

I used to buy the meijer brand cheddar blocks, They were just as good as kraft. The Kroger brand cheese and the Meijer brand have not disappointed me yet. Thye both seem as good as Kraft and I am a cheese snob myself. Kroger peanut butter tastes just like Jiff to me. And the Meijer brand of cheese in a can is as good as the Kraft brand to me.

Sometimes there is a HUGE difference between name brand and generic. This is generally only discovered through trial and error though. Most of the time the name brand and store brand is made by the same factory. Of course, on the box it states something like, "Generic product is not manufactured or distributed by Name Brand Company." What they fail to say is that (for example) Kodak doesn't make their film, but some company does, as well as store brand film. So it's true that Kodak doesn't make and distribute store brand film, even though it still comes from the same place.

I can't stand neither Kroger nor Meijer brand cheese. Kraft is the ONLY kind that tastes good to me. I love cheese, but I HATE milk ... so maybe that is why?

As wit most here for us it is trial and error...... My mother in law is a food snob al lteh wya around then make comments baout how she cant afford food. So i suggest store brands and she freaks, so i ask her to dinner and i make nothing but store brands and she love my food (or she lies) so my point was "proven" to her. Unless she leid but i still made my poitn cause she said she liked the damn food.

If its food and a bit cheaper then this other can i will try it no matter the name on the box.

Oh i dont know if any of you have ever eaten home canned veggies..... They normally get little piece of the cobb and stalk as well, it wont hurt you and often the best veggie are the ones Grannie canned.

I will even try off brand health products, who needs to pay $2.99 for a bottle of peroxide when i can get the same strentgh and size for $1.00 at the dollar store :blink

I buy whatever is cheapest when I need to pick it up.

If I need ketchup and they're having a sale on Heinz that day, and it's the same price or within a few pennies of the store brand, I'll buy the Heinz.

Pretty much same goes for anything.

I'm a big Aldi's & Save-A-Lot shopper. So I buy almost all store-brands. I am very picky, but to me, it's what you do with it.

I will buy the name-brand if the store brand doesn't come in a variety I want. For instance rice sides like Rice-a-Roni. If I want the Spanish Rice, I gotta go with the RAR, 'cause they only usually have chicken & beef flavor in the store brands.

One thing we both are picky about is lunchmeat. There's a packaged ham that is pretty good that we buy for Jon's weekly work lunch. But for weekends, it's gotta be deli meat. Thankfully we have Saveland on Pelham with high-quality turkey & hams on sale every week for about $3.50 a pound.

But we recently took a tour around a Euro Mart - mostly Polish foods straight from Poland. It's on Fort in Trenton. We were so taken by the delicious foods & the good prices, we're thinking about stocking up with that stuff for main meals, and quitting chain grocers altogether, except for basics like flour, condiments, etc.
