I usually do not comment about sports here on DGN, and I strongly dislike the Lakers, but I did think this was unreal.

Yesterday (Sunday) Kobe Bryant of the LA Lakers scored 81 points against the Toronto Raptors in a 122-104 win. When I watched ESPN this morning I had to make sure I heard this correctly and sure enough I did.

Kobe Bryant now is second only to Wilt Chamberlain's 100 point game against the New York Knicks over 40 years ago in 1962.

Even Michael Jordan's one game career high was only 69 points and only four players have ever scored more than 70 in a game. That being Wilt Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor, David Thompson and David Robinson.

The Lakers after a slow start this year are now 22-19 for the season and picking up steam as they go along.

The LA Lakers come to town next week on Sunday, January 29th as they face the Pistons. This could be a major bump in the road for the Pistons as they try to keep their record breaking season ........ well a record breaker. A game to watch for sure.

I told my brother about this and he thought I was joking. He turned on the news and saw it.

Yes it was one of the most spectacular athletic events that will happen in our lifetimes.

81 points is ridiculous.

.....but the Pistons are still the best team in the NBA by far! (33-5)

Well I was not saying by any means that the Pistons would not be able to beat the Lakers. As I stated in my original post, I am not at Laker supporter at all. I live in LA many months of the year and people still talk about this Pistons kicking the Lakers around in the Finals just over a year and a half ago. It is a good feeling coming from Detroit......lol.

Bryant did not have a repeat 81 point game, but he did score 40 points against the Pistons which is still very impressive considering that Detroit is the cream of the crop team of the NBA this year and have the 2nd highest rated defence in the league and don't forget the Pistons are having one of the best starts in NBA history.

Bryant is the heart and soul of the Laker team and he is scoring on average 36 points per game this season (the best in the league). Still I did attend 3 games at the Staples Center thus far this year and the crowd in the stands really is 50/50 on if they like him or not. There is still much bad blood between Bryant and the Laker fans of LA who many still give him the cold shoulder and blame him for breaking up the once unbeatable Lakers of recent years. Of course me wearing my Rasheed Wallace jersey doesn't help much I am sure.

I listen to a bit of Los Angeles radio on the internet from time to time and there and some of the sports shows are fed into itunes. Most of the people in LA thought the Pistons were a fluke in 2004 and that the Pistons didn't win the NBA title but that the Lakers lost it.

Even deep into last year so bozo's on SoCal radio stations were saying the Heat would woop Detroit because of Shaq.

They ain't saying this stuff anymore.

Let's see

2004 the Pistons sign Rasheed Wallace and go something like 25-7 with him in the lineup and then go on to win the NBA title. A parade is had in Detroit and 1 million people attend.

2005 Detroit goes to the NBA finals again and loses a tough 7 game series to this decades other great team, the Spurs. Tim Duncan is a legend and there is no shame in losing to them.

2006 Detroit is having one of the best seasons in NBA histroy and they have beat the Spurs both times they played them, they beat Shaq and the heat the only time they have played so far and have defeated the Lakers again.

Detroit is ranked no.1 on all the nba power rankings and are on pace to equal the best record in NBA history, many NBA analysts think it's a forgone conclusion that Detroit will win the NBA championship again.

2007 ????? - If the Pistons resign Ben Wallace then they will have a good shot of winning next year as well. The team is young, talented and all of their players are feirce competitors. Chauncy Billups is freakin amazing at times. The other night he was hitting all those crazy three pointers.

The Pistons lost by 11 points to the Lakers in LA this past Saturday night (March 5th) with the score being 105-94. The Lakers needed this win as playoff time begins during the end of next month and they now have the 8th seed in the west with plenty of games to go.

As much as I hate the Lakers the playoff atmosphere really isn't the same without them. so I hope they at least can pull off the rest of the season to at least make a first round appearance.

As of right now (March 8) the Pistons still have the best record in the NBA being 48-11, but San Antonio and Dallas are now right behind them (both have a 47-13 record).
