ManicQueen
My daughter gave me a paper today that says she's got detention this Wednesday for not having her assignment book and grade sheet signed. Every Friday she is sent home with an assignment book that tells what they did all week. I sign it and it goes back on Monday morning. Well, yesterday *Monday* I completely forgot to sign it because I had to leave before she did in the morning. My fault. So I'm thinking I should send a shitty letter with her to school tomorrow saying she will NOT be in detention Wednesday and also explaining that it was my fault. On the other hand, I think she deserve's this, especially after I just seen her grade in Math. An E. So as punishment she should go. What do you all think? Should she go or not? Ginevra
I've not heard of an E for a grade before. How does that rate on the A-F scale? (A, B, C, D, F. Or did they drop F and make E it's replacement?) Since you went to work before she went to school which it sounds like it's not your normal routine, perhaps asking the school to rethink detention would be a good idea. Did your daughter actually bring home her assignment book and grade sheet? If so, then yes, call/write the school about the detention. Would she go to detention for the E grade in Math anyways? If so, I'd let it ride since she'd be there anyway.
ManicQueen
An E is equivilant to an F. She's failing math horribly. She brought the assignment book home and the letter. She always does.. that has never been an issue. And she wouldn't have gotten detention for the grade. It's just the fact that I didn't sign to acknowledge that I seen her grade and same goes for the assignment book. I think I'll make her go as punishment for the poor grades but I'm also going to send a letter with her to school tomorrow explaining what happened and that it was my fault. =)

Onyx
Do you think she is trying? I did horribly in math until I got a decent teacher. It very well could be the teacher's fault! Some of them are just no good. When I got a good one it all suddenly clicked and I understood it. I feel a little strange about punishing a kid for bad grades if they are really trying. Hellion
:devil I had my days of getting E's and F's,but to me E should stand for excellent and F should stand for fantastic, sorry just trying to make you laugh. Other than that getting grades like that is definately not good, hopefully something good can be done to help her improve.
ManicQueen
She is so not trying. She's lazy when it comes to homework or any kind of school work for that matter. I am constantly on her ass about it too. I think she's gotten to the point where she doesn't care. For the past few years I've had tutors come over and help her with math and whatever else she needs help it. It will work for about a month or two then she starts slacking.. forgetting to bring home homework, forgetting to do her homework, etc... She needs disapline and I can't give it to her because I'm not around enough. I see her an hour or two everyday during the week because of my work schedule. But I do try my best with her. But it seems my best isn't doing her any good. So I can't put all the blame on the teachers.. I'm part of it. Another things, she knows I can't do math so she likes to use that as an excuse. "Well you don't know how to do this so why do I need to know it?" If I had the money, I would put her in the Sylvan Learning Center. I've heard that place really does wonders with kids that need help in school.

ManicQueen
Let me add that she's easily influenced. She's been hanging around the "bad" group of kids at school. You know who they are, the one's that get into trouble all the time, the one's that get bad grade, etc. The one's like you and I when we were kids. She just needs some extra guidance and a kick in the ass!

A fair punishment is more effective than and unfair one, so get her out of the detention then ground her.

My bad grades came from the skipping school and not doing my homework. Thing that annoyed my teachers the most was the A's I got on all my quizes and tests. Had I actually gone to class more I might have actually made the honor roll. But since I was EXTREMELY bored in class and unchallenged I was either not there or sleeping. Just sqeeked by for graduation. They thought I should just get a trade skill as I would never be able to make it in college. Well my current gpa in school is a 3.4. You might want to schedual a meeting with the school councillor and have them look at her grades (Thats what my mom did when they told her I would pretty much never make it into college and should look at a trade school). Its possable her lack at trying in Math is not from her being lazy. It may very well be she isn't being challenged enough at it. Just giving bennie of doubt on that one as thats how I was in school. I just wrote the teacher a letter explaining that it was my fault and that Samantha won't be attending detention. Hopefully, she won't get into any trouble over this, like suspension because I'm refusing to sign the detention note. We shall see when she get's home from school today. Scary Guy
She should be punished for the E, but not by that, because that isn't what that particular punishment was intended for. I also wouldn't send a shitty letter, just a regular one. It is after all your fault you forgot to sign it.
Lilith
idotn have tiem to read all or expalin further but I personally make it my kids responsibility to make sure i sign the book, and it is done at night not in the morning, that way if they or i forget at night we have till the morning to remeber. Any how if this is the first offense i would say detention is extreme my kids normally get a warning first. But if not the first offense and withthe math grade i say let her have the detention, no matter which way you look at it the school sees it as there responsibility to get it signed not yours. So I'm going to start signing it Friday night or sometime durring the weekend, instread of waiting till Monday morning. I changed my rude letter to a professional mommy letter. I also thought that detention for a first offence with uncalled for. I did let them know that in the letter as well. =)
honeymustard02
Sounds like me when I was in school. Maybe she's not doing her work as a way to get attention from you?? Maybe that's a way she has found to get your full attention and not just a wave and goodbye as you walk out the door. I would look into afterschool programs for homework and what not. Give her a place to go that she'll have fun but also get her work done. I wouldn't punish her for bad grades. I can tell you right now that won't do shit. It'll just make her work less. So I got a voicemail from her teacher this morning *cough*bitch*cough* She wasn't very happy with my decision. She seems to think Samantha needs detention for her bad grades and for not turning her work in. But I thought the detention was for me not signing the damn assignment book? This lady is really pissed off at me. I can't wait to call her back in a few.. hehe :laughing

LadyWindstone
Maybe you should have a little face to face with said teacher. If she had thought that detention would be neccessary for bad grades and not turning in homework then she should have put that in the letter she sent home in the first place. Then the confusion would have been null and void. Since she did not put that in the letter you should take that letter up with you for your little heart to heart. Show her that you thought your child was being punished for something you forgot to do. Explain to her what the confusion was. Be a little forceful as she was forceful with you over the phone. Being the one with the upper hand and being able to say what you will to her face would be a good thing. For some reason teachers lose all their hot air when you are in their face. They know that this is not their child.

Usually once a parent goes in to sit down and talk with the principal things settle a bit and get back to normal. It like the schools sees wich kids they can push around a bit by weather or not the parent seems invovled. Not all schools but i do notice a trend, so make youself visiable and known but keep your cool at the same time.
