VST recommendations, please

I'm looking for at least one good, downloadable VST Drum synth. Either free or demo.

If you have recommendations on free or demo synths I should checkout too, that'd be... great.

I downloaded z3ta today and it is almost... scary.

Looking for things in the EBM/ambient/synthpop vein.

Thank you kindly.

The Plugsound Free doesn't have enough for me. I've already branched away from the synths they have, too, as well as the other package you gave me.

I appreciated the Hammerhead, too, but I'd rather go with using a VST directly in Cubase.

I've already figured out how to use the mixer for real-time fade-ins and outs and things like that. So I'm really enjoying using Cubase, and want to get as proficient with it as I can.

I found I needed only the two I mentioned above.

You're probably doing a lot of manipulation & altering of the presets, right?

I'm not quite that advanced, and at this time, don't feel like learning the software, composing AND learning how to get into more complicated sound alteration like that. I'm already somewhat overwhelmed.

So I'm kinda depending on lots of presets from which to choose the sound I want.

I downloaded one of the more higly recommended drum vst's last night, we'll see if that will help me out. I haven't installed it yet.

Z3ta is a great source of EBM style presets. Almost too good. It has some that are basically pre-programmed loops that play a whole multi-voice 8-bar part by holding down a single key. It has the potential to make using a program like Cubase as simplistic as FruityLoops was. That's where I can see where your attitude towards FruityLoops came from - it makes things too simple, too generic. Blah.

Phee - I really admire you for still using full on synths and stuff like that. I find that the vst's really help make up for the fact that I'm a guitar player, not a keys player, though. There's so much available to help me correct things like hesitant playing, missed cues, etc.

I would recommend Microtonic, Battery, or Kontact drum kits. What's your pleasure? I have most vst soft synths, plugins, etc. Tell me what you want and I'll burn you a CD.

Thank you very much, sir. To be honest, I don't know what I "need". I know that it helps me - while I'm learning - to keep things a touch more simple. But then again, I bore easily with simplicity so it's nice to have more advanced things available.

Why don't you pick for me? The "sound" I'm going for is kinda typical EBM with some ambient, and I would like, someday, to have acess to a good guitar package like Slayer. I'd also love to have some orchestral instruments like good woodwinds (oboe, English horn, etc.), brass, tympani, that sort of thing.

I haven't even touched on sound effects yet, though I downloaded what I thought was a guitar VST and it turned out to be a virtual amp, but I'm not ready to use things like that yet.

I downloaded the demo of Xpansion DR-008 but I haven't installed it yet.

Ill burn you a CD of Vst plugins with everything you need. You can meet me at one of the clubs the next time you decide to go out like CC for example and I'll give it to you then. If you dont know how to extract files, I'll walk you through it as well:) Send me a private email for questions.

Sounds good. Thanks very much.

I know how to extract files. On the "how computer tech savvy" poll, I'm in the "I can generally figure things out myself, but know where to go for help" category. :wink

I'll be at City Club this Saturday. I don't generally go to other clubs, mostly due to not going out on weekdays. But I'm my own boss and can even meet you somewhere during the daytime if that's more convenient. PM me to discuss a time/place for handoff. =)

Thanks kindly!

Ill see you at CC. I usually come early and hang out when I go. Names robert in case you didnt know.

Matter of fact, I don't think I did. =) Critter will be fine in my case.

Jon and I try to get there about 10:30, sit in the parking lot until 11:00 then come in and head directly for the "DGN corner". In case nobody has ever pointed me out before, I'm blonde, fat, and will be wearing a black leather full-length corset, short, pointy black velvet skirt & red velvet top with big sleeves. My husband will be hanging with me, probably in black jeans and a black linen long-sleeved shirt or a typical biker jacket.

Would you rather not bring the CD in? If so, we try to park in the $3.00 lot next to the Ramada, and try to park over by the fence on 1st. It's a red 99' Chevy S-10 pickup truck with a darker red cap on the back, and has seen better days. You can bring the disc in a plastic shopping bag and toss it into the cap via the flip-up window in back - we don't lock it.

If you're going to do that, let us know so we're sure to get it out before leaving the parking lot.

In any case, looking forward to meeting you at CC. =) And thanks again!

I admit I tried to illegally download the latest version of REASON off of Limewire and had problems installing it. In theory, if you had Reason then you might not need another VSTi at all. It has tons of dance drum kits and tons of synths, effects, arpeggiators, etc.

I'm broke so I stick with the free ones, and if you search, the free ones can be great.
