Unemployment is at an all time low. Choices, choices and more choices.

Umm... Overall US unemplyment is around 4.7% (Jan), which is not bad, but Michigan is the second highest in the country at 6.7%. You may not be feeling it up there so much but in the big cities... it sucks. The only state worse is Mississippi.. because of Katrina.

When I was 18 I wanted my eyebrow pierced. My Mother was a single parent raising my brother and I and told me that as long as I live under her roof I could not have it. She even said she would kick me out.

I brought up the idea to her several more times. Her response was always the same. Then one drunken night I went out and got it done. She hated it...and looked at me in disgust for about 2 days but she never threw me out and eventually got over it. I knew she would never throw me out for that.

I still have the piercing. I take it out for all interviews and I do not wear it to work as the dress code does not allow it.

Exactly. I have three college degrees. I have run my own company for almost 15 years and finally made it official 2 years ago with a DBA (ah, the joys of a Schedule C tax form). I have experience in management, accounting, legal, production, marketing, advertising, PR, customer service, employee relations, research and development, event planning, and a whole bunch of other stuff. Yet I work night shift at Walgreens as a cashier and stocker because that's the best job I could find. I'm still sending out resumes and cover letters and hardly any bites. Why? Because unemployment is so high that it's an employer's market and they can pick and choose who they want and if you're not exactly it, they can keep searching elsewhere. Hopefully it'll turn around soon.

So, yeah. To relate it to the original post (so my post doesn't end up an egocentric rant) I'd say stay conservative until you're on your own and settled into a job. Then you can live it up as large as you want at home, and as large as they'll let you at work. If you end up working at home, then W00T!

But, that's my opinion.

I suppose there's also something to be said for no regrets. Do shit now while you still can, 'cuz later might be too late. "Live, Love, Be, Believe".

I'm sorry to take the devil's advocate side of things even though I do know how it feels and remember quite well how it is to be under a parent's roof.

My parents always said "My house, my rules". And for one, as 'Heil Hitler' as it might sound, I rather believe in it.

If I tell my friends "No pot in my house or in my presence", I expect that to be adhered to. So if I ask someone to housesit for me, I expect that they'll honour my request and not smoke pot in my house because it's MY house, not theirs.

If my parents said "No dates until X age", that's exactly what they meant. If they said "No piercings until X age", that's what they meant, too.

If the parents are paying for the piercings, for school, room and board, and they say no piercings while you're living in my home, as much as it crimps my individual style, I'd have to adhere to that. They're paying the meal ticket. There's no reason to bite the hand that feeds.

4.7 is pretty good compared to the Clinton years where it averaged around 6.5

Perhaps. But I seem to recall the time as a being pretty damn good business and economy wise.

Also, were not talking about 8 years ago just so we can bash Clinton one more time... the discussion was about here and now.. in Michigan. And here and now in Michigan, forget the statistics... the job market sucks, and if FarrIL wants to stay reasonably close to home, her job options are pretty shitty.

And actually, with college, I CANT hold 2 jobs. I barely have enough to do the homework I get from classes, even with only one job. oo;

Sure you do. My daughter's mom somehow manages to take college courses online, work 20 hours a week, do freelance work and have the kids primarily. (Since they go to school in her city)

I'm sure you have a few more hours somewhere. If there was a job... :whistling

As active on the internet as I am, I'm not an "online courses" kind of person. With the time it takes me to get to classes..... I just prefer being there IN a class instead of reading a lesson. I learn better when I can interact with people.

You get to interact online. They mostly screw you over during group projects... :doh

A friend of mine takes online courses. There is a "chat room" where everyone shows up into and then the teacher teaches from there. How it progresses, I don't know; I've not watched the class proceedings over my friend's shoulder.

  • 2 months later...

I completley understand and sympathize. I am attending graduate school full time, as well as doing freelance work, and I also work full time. I used to make great money as an exeuctive assistant, and now all I can find are temping or contract jobs. I may have job on contract for a three weeks or a month or two, then I have to wait to see if anything else comes up. I can go upwards of 2-3 weeks waiting for an assignment at times. It is rough. I haven't had insurance in over 3 years. The upward mobility of the job market here barely registers as a blip. You have to look at where those jobs can be found (in what field). Working for placement agencies both indirectly and directly I have seen the bids that have come in for work in multiple fields. (industiral, manufacturing, IT, Clerical etc.) Companies really aren't hiring, and when they do it is for alot less pay then was usually seen before. I understand and sympathize. Hang in there!

Rah!

My nipples took a while before they stopped causing problems...  Our bodies all react different to "intrusions"...

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

My nose has been infected twice in the year and a half I've had it. Just happens. Hurts like hell, but I deal and treat it and it gets better. Doesn't bother me otherwise.

Got my nose piercing with a friend who also got hers done. They warned us it would probably get infected in the next few weeks. Just happens. It did, both of us at the same time. She took hers out. I suffered and kept mine.

None of my other piercings have ever bothered me.

Ya my prince albert got infected once, then I had to take it out =(

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

:blink OW! I think your brain has to be infected to even consider putting anything sharp and/or pokey down there. Although I guess I'm a hypcrite because I put a razor down there when I shave, but that's different.

HAHA Spook. XD

Pharoh: Yous got some serious guts for getting THAT done........ I gotta go with Spook on this one...... "OWW!"

For those of you who knew about my little adventure with getting pierced at a 10gauge in my cartilage...... the piercing doesnt hurt, it's just sensitive because it's healing. It's oozing some blood and lymph but nothing major. I'm spraying it with H2Ocean to take care of it, and I dont lay on that side of my body at the moment.

But I gotta get some smaller jewelry in the hole soon, because the metal is just too big around. e.e

(( and, as an excuse to not drink on my birthday, I'm planning on getting my labret redone around my 21st birthday =P My sister aint gonna get me to drink!! ))
