When people say they don’t have anything because they’ve been “careful” but they are not talking to their partners about STDs/STIs, not getting tested and not insisting that their partners be tested, then what they really mean is “lucky”

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Another possible name for them could be "infected".

To be choosey against what?  Avoiding dirty whores with diseases?

This is quite an interesting comment considering OUR history.

You can't tell if someone has an STD by the way he or she looks or acts. The only way to know whether you have an STD, including HIV, is to get tested. Appearances can be deceiving.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Choosey against having sex with anyone I've just met which I have never done. Not even with you. Also - I didn't use the expression you used nor did I imply anything I was only making a descriptive point about my own choices.

I have been accused of being too selective about the women I have been with is what I was saying - that had nothing to do with their past. But if you want to know then I'll say this - if someone is going to have sex with you just after you've met them then shouldn't you be concerned about their sexual past? Let alone their use of protection and level of judgement?

It is not an entirely invalid statement. It definitely pays in other ways to be choosey. I have learned this myself over the years, the hard way.

However, in this context, even with "choosey-ness" you can find yourself with a long term partner who actually had an STD, who didn't know about it and as yet still is unaware about who gave it to her. It may have been a one night stand, it may have been a person with whom she had a relationship. You never really know, as there are no business cards left on your night stand.

This should illustrate to anyone that "being choosey" unless a blood test is involved is JUST NOT ENOUGH and this is exactly what people need to know.

Women can go for years without having it, cause there are no symptoms for it

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

oh no no i don't think that is true. the women i have known to have it have become SICK when they had it. the men i have known have not even KNOWN they had it til the women they were with told them THEY had it.

so the women i knew had symptoms but the men, did not.

Well the X that gave it to me had no symptoms, and when I got it from her, I had some bad symptoms.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

not happy to hear you had some bad symptoms but in a way it IS good because then you knew and could get treated.

i know someone who had no idea and even after he was TOLD he had it he said to the girl "you got it some place else" and went on to spread it to yet MORE girls before he finally went in cuz he didn't have any symptoms at all. (or so he said anyways)

another guy i know had it, gave it to his girlfriend - she told him. she got treated and he didn't and then he gave it to her AGAIN. i don't know why people, after knowing they have something, would not want to get it checked out! :wink

I did ask about this from a family member who is an MD and he said that there is a difference in how the virus strains manifest. The viruses are the same: in that Chicken pox, Shingles, Type 1 and 2 are the same virus family with different protein markers and different symptomologies. I called him recently after reading all about this on here *and also having had a few coldsores when I was in gradeschool* I was a bit freaked out as well as curious. I've never had any of my old boyfriends complain of any problems, and I have also been tested for everything on multiple occasions. So, a blood test isn't always effective as I imagine I would be positive for Type 1 having had a coldsore as a kid. I guess the virus has to be in an active stage for transmition. He said the only way to tell is by tissure biopsy, not a blood test.

He said Type 1 and Type II are different: 99% of people who get Type I infections in the genital region have little/no pain, little/no swelling or blistering in the region. Type II is much more virulent: fever, blistering, etc.

Hell, many of my friends, family members, more than 1/2 people I know get cold sores.

I had Trichomoniasis when I was 18. I had no clue I had it or what it was. The doctor told me I had it when I went for my yearly pap smear. Thank god it was curable and I had to take some pills for 7 days and then it was gone.

Apparently one of the 2 guys I had been dating was a carrier for it and gave it to me. Someone who is a carrier does not have any symptoms and will continue to pass the std around till he or she gets treated.

Like I said I had no symptoms of this std and had no clue anything was even wrong with me.

That was the only thing I have ever gotten. I was/am real lucky.

Centers for Disease Control and PreventionHSV-1 infection of the genitals can be caused by oral-genital or genital-genital contact with a person who has HSV-1 infection. Genital HSV-1 outbreaks recur less regularly than genital HSV-2 outbreaks.

www.herpes.com

A prior infection with oral HSV-1 lowers the risk of acquiring genital HSV-1 even further. Studies show that genital HSV-1 infections almost always occur in people who have no prior infection with HSV of either type (Corey, Annals of Internal Medicine, 1983).

In the absence of prior oral infection, however, HSV-1 spreads easily to the genital area, usually through oral sex. In some countries, such as Japan and parts of Great Britain, genital HSV-1 is as common as genital HSV- 2, or more common.

....

www.herpes.com

most people infected with HSV-1 in the genital area have few, if any, outbreaks after the initial episode, far fewer than is typical with either oral HSV-1 or genital HSV-2. ....only 2- 5% of recurring genital outbreaks are caused by HSV-1. Research conducted by Lawrence Corey, MD, and colleagues at the University of Washington in Seattle shows that genital HSV-2 recurs 10 times more often than genital HSV-1.

According to a study by Wald et al. (New England Journal of Medicine, 1995), among 110 women with genital herpes, the average number of recurrences per year for those with genital HSV-1 was zero.

Thanks for posting this Holliwood. I do appreciate what you have to say and you made me focus even more on the lesser recurrence of Type 1 in the genital area. That is evidenced in the items above.

To lessen the stigma of it all is a good thing. I know this, however, be sure that you are still aware that although it is lessened - it is still there.

I have herpes Type-1 in my genital region. Because of the higher rate of reactivation of HSV-1 in the oral region - There is a statistically greater likelyhood of my having gotten it by receiving oral sex from a lover with oral type-1 than a lover with genital type-1.

Recurrence of symptoms. Physically, it "feels" to me like a non-issue. I have often thought "What the hell is the fuss about?? It is barely even annoying!!" Unfortunately, although the chance is lowered I CAN still give my significant others Oral HSV-1 or Genital HSV-1. I know that and they have to know that. For many many people, that small likelyhood is a dealbreaker. This is real life.

I am not saying that having oral herpes is a bad thing or anything more socially significant than it is now - all in all, it IS nothing but an annoying skin condition - regardless of site. But just like someone can get HIV from sex or other means, Herpes Type 1 and Type 2 are BOTH sexually transmitted diseases and it is important that people know the whole picture instead of thinking "it is just a coldsore".

Also, make sure you are not confusing Cold Sores and Canker sores - they are different and "Canker sores" are unrelated to herpes.

at this time I am clean but in the past i have had an STD namely the CLAP.....ouchy and i have had critters twice and you boys and girls it does not matter how picky you are or how careful you are if you are sexually active you run a chance of getting these things no matter how cool or slick you may think you are. I think some one said it earlier they are the glass slipper of our generation.........I got a kick out of that one....but anyways sometimes you can have anyone of these diseases and may not show signs or they may be mild enough for you not to relize you have something so my suggestion for you if you are sexually active and weather you use protection or not get tested at least once year just to make sure. we are all grown ups here(hopefully) so lets not quible over a subject as important as this........THAT IS ALL

I'm clean and I know i"m clean because I get tested yearly.

Plus I have only been with one person. Which cuts down my risks. But yes I know that's only if HE stays only with me. Which I know he has and will. If not I'll kill him.

It comes down to TALKING and TEACHING everyone about these things. For being a generation so fluent in doing/giving sexual acts, we sure are afraid to educate younger people about it.

This thread makes me dry up quicker than Menopause. It's too bad it has to be this way. So many people will just continue to pass their std on and simply not give a fuck. People are even acting non-chalant when they have HIV, they just keep fucking. I think it's like with any disease, you are in denial for a certain period of time. I am also thinking condoms don't really protect you as much as the media tries to make us believe. They can tear easily, it doesn't cover the entire cock usually. Also, when people do oral, I don't know many people who suck cock or eat pussy with condoms and dental dams. Do you?
