I don't care who makes fun of me....

Great, another genre arguement...

EBM/Synthpop/Futurepop/Gothic Disco = SAME GODDAMNED THING!

Classic EBM/Industrial = SAME GODDAMNED THING!

Goth/Death Rock= SAME GODDAMNED THING!

Those are also the most popular names for those genres. I'm consolidating things down because at a certain point it doesn't matter. I classify things by what crowd I'm playing for and who will dance to what. Most people who will dance to Apop will dance to VNV. Most people who dance to Skinny Puppy will dance to SPK (depending on the song), and most people who dance to... well I guess you can't really dance to the last group, just mope around and do your dance interpretation of the autumn leaves or something, with the back of your hand stapled to your forehead....

...Like mine is right now because everyone fucks up the genre names.

I do NOT classify them by all the instruments used, the tempo of the beat, where all the members are from, etc... it's trivial bullshit that no one should even care about (except the DJs so they know wether it will fit in with the current set of music or not).

What people should be concerned with is if they like the song or not. In the end that's all that matters anyhow.

I saw them last summer.  I was in the front row.  I could have licked the sweat from Tom Shear's bald head if I wanted.  (which I did not, if you must know).

When I saw the Cruxshadows last fall, I DID lick Rachel's boot. :grin

I like VNV for the most part... I just like Skinny Puppy, Frontline Assembly, and Front 242 more....

I love sounds and textures and noise that mixes with the rythems and creates environments and atmosphere...

VNV is much more simplistic and straightforward with what they are looking for.... Melody and Danceability.... they are extrememly talented, just they are going for something that that is not quite where my favorite spot is.... I love them in the clubs though

To each their own I guess. I am a fan of abstract melodies and VNV Nation does that for me right now, much in the same way that Severed Heads did that for me in the late 80's. VNV's chord progressions are not as obvious as say, Apop (who I love by the way), Ronan Harris can make a catchy song without being obvious about it.

I can't get into Skinny Puppy at all, but I'm probably in the DGN minority on this.

I saw in your Myspace profile that you were into Vangelis.... OMG when I was 19 I was the only one I knew who was into Vangelis!!!

Yes good VNV song BTW... not quite enough texture for me though

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Vangelis is awesome, especially his mid 90's electro stuff. The Chariots of Fire era stuff was good too though.

Really? I feel their music is quite the oppisite. I have a hard time telling one song from another because they all are the same. They generally use the same sounds, key, and tempo from song to song. Along with very similar rhythm and melodies. They found something that works well and that's what they do. They make exactly the type of music that they want, and no one can fault them for that. When it comes right down to it, that is the only reason for doing music anyway, but original or inovative they are not.

Yup... but that is just our opinion I am sure

I have never heard a VNV song that was not in 4/4 (and know using triplets is still 4/4 just so you know)

That being said... they are solid and good at what they do.... they don't do anything else, and what they do is not all that complicated... but hey, that doesn't mean it cannot be enjoyed... (look at punk for example)

Or country, which stands as the most popular style of music in the US. Find what works and do it over and over and over.....

There we go... exactly couldn't have said it better...

Most EBM/Synthpop/Futurepop/jiffsythnfuturepopsecret/whateverthehellpop is electro country... Easy to like, not too much to process, and easy to bounce to, sounds like fun to me.

(I like Deathmetal too... so I am not claiming that my tastes are that easy to understand either)

Oh really? You think "Arena" sounds like "Genesis" and "Colour of Rain" ?

They generally use the same sounds, key, and tempo from song to song.

Bullshit. This was true for 'Praise the Fallen' and 'Empires' because they used one synth for all the songs (access virus) but is absolutely not true for 'Matter + Form' and 'Future Perfect'. If you want I will note the keys of every song (all of them are different) and tempos (you think their ballads are the same tempos as their dance songs??????????) and they use completely different sounds on their songs.

Right, they invented a genre (futurepop) which is copied by almost everyone on Metropolis and they mix classical, industrial, synthpop and they have a song that goes from B to G flat to D minor in a matter of 12 bars but they aren't innovative. (insert rolls eye smiley)

Colour of Rain is not 4/4 so there you go. You guys are right, opinions are opinions and facts are fact, you and Odims are factually wrong in your posts above. Please before you post that all their songs are the same tempo please look at the BPM's before making a comment. Please look up their time signatures before incorrectly saying all their songs are 4/4. Please look at their chord progressions before dismissing it as fluff dance music. I really wish people on DGN took some time to research things before they posted and we could avoid debates like this.

VNV's last 2 albums go from slow, brooding songs to harder dance/trance songs to classical instrumental tracks with synth-strings and pianos to synthpop songs.

Seriously someone who likes Haujobb shouldn't complain about VNV Nation's lack of innovation. I mean, I'm sorry that VNV has largely pushed Skinny Puppy out of the rotation at the goth clubs but hey, more people like them.

By the way a quick check of the billboard charts will prove that Country is not the most popular music in America. But again, why let facts get in the way?
