I like them, but I'm wondering why you don't. Do you also hate Bauhaus? Because they have very similar styles. Tim the bartender at Mephisto's just can't get enough of them and it is the closest thing resembling goth music that i've heard on the radio in a long time (save Type O Negative at 3 AM on WRIF back when Life is Killing me was new a few years back).

I like Joy Division and New Order but I don't like Interpol and the Killers.

Personally I thought Lulu_vox's list has been the best so far (second to mine of course).

Though I think I maybe have different paramaters of what "bands everyone should own" means. I mean, alot of people have heard The Smiths, Frontline Assembly and Black Sabbath and simply don't like them. I took the question to mean, everyone should own something by X artist because everyone's life would be enhanced by it. I used to like the Smiths in high school but I can't get into them at all nowadays and I have a hard time thinking everyone should own something by them. So I thought Meg's answerr to that one was pretty good.

Or were we just supposed to put our 3 favorites in that last? Or maybe the question is supposed to mean whatever we want it to mean?

By the way, everyone should own 'Pet Sounds' by the Beach Boys as it was a watershed moment in terms of songwriting, production and arrangement of vocal harmonies. Can that be argued at this point? I guess everyone should also own Sgt.Peppers and Elvis Presley's Sun sessions as well as tracking down the old and not-so-great recordings of Robert Johnson and perhaps a fan of electronic music, breakbeats or sampling should have at least one Kraftwerk album in their collection. If you're "goth" you probably need a Bauhaus CD.

No, I love Bauhaus, but I think She Wants Revenge's sounds comes across as totally passionless. I mean, I heard an ad for them last night praising them and their "'80s-sounding music," and I started thinking how icky it was that there's pretty much no way to describe their music aside from saying something like that, or "they sound like (Some Band from the '80s That Did The Same Thing and Did it With Heart)." Also, they sound like what would happen if Cake and Interpol had an ugly, ugly baby.

nice! George Acosta and Apoptygma Berzerk gettin' some respect up in dis house! I listen to Apop daily (love the new CD even though it's a rock album) and George Acosta reminds me of my time in Miami hearing all that trance in the clubs and on the beaches. Paul Van Dyk is my favorite trance artist.

I also love Country, well, some country. Do you like Patsy Cline? Jimmy Dale Gilmore? Lefty Frizzel? Johnny Cash? I also think Dwight Yoakem and the Mavericks are great as far as newer stuff.

I must say I love Patsy, sweet dreams is like the saddest song Ive ever heard in my life .. and her voice is just amazing, and give me some Hank willams anyday.

I think Country today is pretty bad, but then I again I only hear small things of Pop-country you know? Anything that is played on the radio and I pretty much hate everything on the radio that isnt a classic rock station =)

I admitted in high school that the stuff i listen to is 'crap' and it has been dubbed that ever since.

ME: "crap"

YOU: "haha... really what do you like?"

ME: "no, really. its crap. you wouldnt like it"

so when i go thru and see peoples answers to 'what no one should be listening to' i cant help but laugh, cuz several of them are 'crap' i listen to. its all good, tho, as long as no one else has to suffer at the hands of my CD collection.

on the plus side, i also listen to a LOT of good music. and threads like this give me more opportunity to grow!
