Elvira and Gothic Culture

Recommended Posts

Hi, this is really awkward and random. My name is Xie, I'm a 3rd year student at a college in Memphis. I'm taking an art class there on the subject of multiples, and for the end of term research paper, we're writing research papers on different topics: mine being Elvira.

I aim to discuss how she developped her persona through imitation and influence of past and contemporary horror characters as well as entertainers. However, I also wish to extend this project to include both the influence she had upon current gothic culture and the influence which may have been exerted upon her in creating a 'friendlier dark side"

I'm not gothic myself; I could possibly claim to be romantic goth, but that's not wholly true. However, that being said, I made a survey which if anyone would be willing to help me and fill out (It's brief. 10 questions), I would be most appreciative.

The survey resides here.

Thank you.

What do you mean "characters" as far as Im conserned she pretty much stole everything from one alter ego... that being Vampira.

Shes like a blonde (in the annoying way she acts) Vampira.

There is of course, vampira, who is an obvious influence on Elvira, but I also wonder to what degree characters such as Lily Munster or Morticia Adams as well as celebrities like Cher may have had an influence on the character model of Elvira for personality.

I cant see where Yvonne DeCarlo comes into this. She was very much more of a classy sort .... so to speak. Elvira in my opinion was just a pare of boobs. Something that guys could wack it off to in the 80's because there was no myspace. Lily was nothing like her.

as more Mortica .. perhaps the look, but as far as personality, hell no. Mortica was sexy, not a skank.

She does have the 70's Cher sense of humor ... which is highly annoying ....

I dont know if much of them really had an influence. They were popular in their day but it doesn't seem like the "scene" took off til the late 80s. I tended to take my personal identities from horror characters as Pinhead, art from H.R. Giger.
