Silent Hill

Well, I dont play videgoames, I'm sure all of you know that.

A while back, my friend Mark (( different than the Marc we all know and love so much )) got me to watch a fan-video ( ? ) of this strange guy with a metal thingy on his shoulders. This guy is walking around what looks like a slaughterhouse, doing naughty things to monsters with no arms.

This guy is known as Pyramid Head.

Mark sent me a wallpaper to put on my computer screen that has Pyramid Head with his oversized butter knife and carrying a new victim, skinless.

Well, I watched and loved the video so much, I downloaded the original sound track from the game.

And when I finally saw the trailer FOR the actual movie, and saw that Pyramid Head was going to be in it, I KNEW I had to see the movie.

Well, tonight I did.

My opinions?

It was DAAAAAAAAAAAMMN good!!

I am betting it is as I have seen the game played. Very spooky and up my alley as I love horror/suspense games and movies. I can't wait to go see it this weekend. I think I am going to bring a gal that is easily scared so she will grab onto me lol.

I got to see a sneak preview of this movie last week and i liekd it alot. tons of "What the fuck" moments just liek the game. the only problems i had was the editing seemed a bit bad here and there, and I wanted to see more monsters! But, the special effects ROCKED.

The "flashback" sequence near the end of the movie is worth every single penny in my opinion. But i totally agree farril dear, pyramid head is all shades of creepy.. And "Colin" was awesome!

yeah the story was somewhat dumbed down to fit time of the movie

but it was to be expected seeing as how after 4 games all of the secrets of silent hill still are not known

Indeed... But man it looked cool though

I finally saw it...it kicked ASS!!!...I couldnt help not holding my enthuasim in when i saw pyramid head and screamed "YES!!" when he made his appearance...many people in the theater didnt appreciate that lmao

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Oh same here.

My arms were flailing and I was muttering 'OMG there he is!!" when Pyramid Head made his first appearance.

When he made his second appearance, I ended up looking like "O.O" at the end of that scene. New skin-skirt anyone? =P

*le sigh*

I wish I could say I liked the movie - I really do. I thought the trailer and the posters looked great...and that's cos they LOOKED great. THe hype-machine did a number on me and I went in with rather high hopes, but hen the actors opened their mouths though...dialogue was trite, half the time delievered rather poorly (I know, you can't always fault child actors) and I didn't CARE about them. The atmosphere was rather nice - very similar to the game. The music was great - it actually fit the movie cos...more than half the music came from the actual videogame soundtracks (the music in the trailer "promise" was from SH2, the portishead-esque song near the end was from SH3, etc). The script, its plot holes and the actors just didn't do it for me. A lackluster ending and some shoddy CG to boot and you've got a movie that leaves a bad taste in your mouth. Hellraiser (and even some of its rather bad sequels) did it better.

cheers,

Actually...one line bugged me....when they jumped from the hotel to the storage room...even though the entire town was burnt down in a fire...they had to say

"Looks like this place was on fire."

YAH THINK?!

But all in all I thought it was awesome...now i just got to get Joni to muster up the courage to see it (she doesnt like scary movies...and that saddens me...most of my movie collection is horror)

Yes... It was amazing looking and sounding.... a plot would have been a nice finishing touch

I loved it!

It was even more creepy because of the theater being entirely deserted except for myself and daughter and her friend. We went in at 12 noon today and it was very strange having the entire theater to ourselves, though kind of fun being able to talk out loud to each other and make comments.

For those of you who have seen it and especially those who didn't think it had much plot -- what do you think of this guy's review I'm quoting here?

***Major major spoilers posted below***

**MAJOR SPOILERS** as I explain the entire movie for those of you who say it makes no sense...

Dahlia Gillespie had a daughter named Alessa. No one knew who her father was. Alessa was not liked by children or adults...a group of religious fanatics, led by Christabella, believed that this innocent was a witch and needed to be cleansed (that means killed)so that evil would not invade their community. Dahlia agreed because she was so fearful of this group and their promised damnation of her if she didn't agree. They burnt poor little Alessa, but the sacrifice went wrong and killed everyone in the cult...That's right, THEY'RE ALL DEAD...All of them are stuck in limbo...purgatory if you will. In this purgatory, Alessa's pain and anguish turn to hatred and a desire for revenge...Her hatred is so great that the bed ridden Alessa breaks off into two parts...Her dark side and everything that is light in Alessa. They don't want her light side to be overtaken by the hatred, so to protect her they take her to an orphanage...there is also another reason for this.

Rose and Chris Da Silva want to adopt a child. And although she's adopted, Sharon is Rose's daughter; She knew it from the moment she saw her...

But as Sharon gets older, she starts sleep walking and having nightmares about a place called "Silent Hill"...She is being called back by Alessa...the other part of herself, and she's supposed to bring Rose with her (because Rose is the one Alessa really needs)...so, Rose takes Sharon to the town of Silent Hill.

Along the way they meet up with a cop, Cybil Bennett, who is suspicious of Sharon's outburst...The movie even explains why Cybil would be so suspicious of something not that out of the ordinary; You see, in the past, she found a little boy dumped in a well by a psychopath and had to stay in the well with the boy until help came, to keep him from dying...so Cybil is probably almost paranoid when it comes to children...Cybil follows Rose and Sharon into Silent Hill an abandoned old coal mining town that is still burning underground...As soon as they enter the city limits, a ghostly figure of a girl runs out into the road in front of Rose's car and causes then to wreck...Could it be Alessa? Rose smacks her head hard...We later find out that Cybil wrecked and smacked her head as well...Hmmnn...

So, now they're in the town, so let's speed it up...Alessa's revenge is the darkness that turns everything dark and hellish...The siren on the church is to warn all the cult members to get to the church because the darkness can't get in there...Alessa sent her light part out so that she could bring someone back, like Rose, because Alessa needs Rose to take her into the church, because Rose can go into the church...where she can then finally get her revenge on those that mercilessly destroyed her...The only way that Rose could get into purgatory and help is by...that's right, by dying...Rose and Cybil both died in the accident. No Cybil wasn't needed by Alessa, she just basically got caught up in a bad situation. You can tell that they're dead because when Chris goes to the town with the cop, the town is abandoned, but completely normal and...this is the big one...Rose can run right through him...and at the end, that's why Rose and Sharon are still in the haze, but Chris is completely clear.

But no, there is a completely other level to this movie...Alessa was a sweet innocent that people decided was a heathen because she seemingly had no father...Sound familiar?

The fanatics sacrifice her, but she comes back, almost as if resurrected...get it? She's almost crucified there at the end...there are rows of thorns (that would be the barbed wire) everywhere...So, those of you who love "The Chronicals of Narnia" because of it's deep religious message that comes from a Lion being resurrected by magic (and not a Heavenly Father)...and hate "Harry Potter" even though it is actually much more religious (in a poor boy being the savior of an entire people, but being hated by many simply for being who is and having to fight against an ultimate evil...sounds more like Jesus than C.S. Lewis' Lion to me)...You all should hate this movie, because it shows us what might have happened if Jesus had been pissed about his sacrifice and came back to seek revenge on those that killed him.

And yes, all of this IS explained in the movie...well, except the parallel to Jesus (I just thought that that was fairly obvious with the imagery)...This is what we call an intelligent movie. The filmmakers actually expected audiences to think and assumed that they had the capacity to do so. I understand that it can be confusing in this time of Paris Hilton and Jessica Simpson."

Alrighty. I played the original game. The first game I ever played that totally freaked me out. I had to print out a walkthrough just to finish it as quickly as possible (I hate to leave a story unifinished, thus I didn't just quit playing). I played in such a way as to get the "good" ending. I do not know what the "bad" endings consisted of. I also have a very poor memory for certain things, and I don't remember the exact explanation given in that ending.

Coming from the point of view of having played the game, here is my own take on the movie, which I finally decided to let myself see last Monday.

Oddly enough, Onyx, I was also totally alone in the theater. TOTALLY. I almost walked out as I thought that would just be too freaky, especially the way the game weirded me out.

And here are where the spoilers/review begin. Scroll down for more.

I wasn't as weirded out as I could have been because of the way they added the scenes dealing NOT with Rose & the inhabitants of the town. In other words, every time they dealt with Chris, the male cop, any places outside of Silent Hill, it broke the mood. That disappointed me deeply.

As much as the game disturbed me, I wanted to be that disturbed by the film.

The effects were brilliant. They were everything I'd hoped for. They alone could have done me in big time. But the storyline - eh. Eh eh eh.

I understand that what you see in a game needs translation to make it to a movie screen. I just didn't like the way they did it.

In the game, the main protagonists are not dead. They go through what they go through in the town and then make their way back to civility. I have not played any of the sequel games, so I don't know how that related to future games. I do know future games dealt, at least some of them, with totally different characters.

Anyhoo, I did not like the ending. I didn't like the fact that Rose & Sharon were dead. Remember, I played the game in such a way as to guarantee the "good" ending. That's me - ugly American who can't deal with a sad ending. I admit it.

I disagree with the reviewer on one point. I do not believe the filmmakers intended you to think the nutball cultists intended Alessa to die. I think that was purely an accident. I do not believe for a second that Dahlia intended her daughter to die.

That's just me. I am now sufficiently interested in the story to attempt to play the sequel games. But any movie sequels will probably disappoint me.

Yes, I got the impression that they gasped in horror when she fell into the flames, but if they were not trying to kill her, what in the world were they doing? Were they trying to slowly torture the demons out of her or something?
