Prediction: The PS3 will flop

Recommended Posts

Seeing that the price of the PS3 will be around $500 people all over the internet who once were hardcore Playstation people are now talking of getting the Xbox 360 or waiting for the Nintendo Revolution.

I can not imagine people will pay $500 for a gaming console. Sony is crazy. Yes it will have the best graphics engine and will be able to play blu ray dvd's but it's $500!!!!!!!

Also expect Microsoft to cut the price of the Xbox360 and launch Halo 3 when the PS3 comes out.

I think this will be similar to when Sega became irrelevant because Sony overtook them. The Xbox 360 will be the new system of choice.

Yah I heard someone say at E3 that you best to just buy an Xbox 360 and Wii. Instead of the p3 for 500-600$, you can get two for the price of one.. .however .. they still havent said how much the Wii will run... so I dont know. ALL I KNOW IS I WANT REDSTEEL!!!! :innocent

Judging by how crazed parents get at Christmas time when the new consoles come out...

I don't think Sony is going to have any trouble getting $500 from people.

But there will always be people like me and Jon who are patient enough to keep playing the older consoles until the new ones go on sale used.

Same thing with games. I'm still finishing up PS1 games, and have half a dozen PS2 games on hold.

I've heard Red Steel looks sweet for Nintendo. I am not so sure how I feel about their new controller. I've read the cost will be $250 for the Nintendo Wii or whatever they're calling it this week.

Feirce, I just can't imagine there are that many parents who can afford $500 even at Christmas. The Xbox may render the PS3 irrelevant because it will be out in stores and entire year before the PS3 comes out. Think about it - $500 is half a grand! Plus you need to buy an extra controller and games will be $60 minimum.

The Xbox 360 just looks more attractive from a price perspective.

The Nintento will be the cheapest one but they need to get some good 3rd party game developers.

Oh and I might get an Xbox 360 this week. Project Gotham Racing looks sweet.

That's what I thought about Atari, Intellivision, PS1, and PS2 - consoles and games alike.

And it's what I still think.

But the parents still bought. And they still buy. And I still think they're off their rocker.

For these nutjobs, it's not about "affording". It's "satisfy the kid, no matter the cost."

Though I admit to brand loyalty, I would prefer to have the satisfaction of seeing this blow up in Sony's face the way you think it will. We shall see.

Oh - and as far as XBox being better, Intellivision was better than Atari. And Dreamcast better than PSI. But people still buy what they like. And an awful lot of people like Sony. Myself included.

I would love to buy the PS3, it sounds like it will be the best videogame system.

But I think it will flop because it seems Microsoft has the advantage now.

1. It is cheaper

2. It is already out in stores and it has sold a boatload of consoles already

3. It will have a much bigger game library in November that the PS3 will have

4. Halo 3 will be launched then as well.

yeah something told me when i saw this headline that ted started this post

the ps3 isnt going to fail more people are willing to buy it then would be expected

plus on idea that people need to get out of their heads is that there is such thing as a better console then the other in reality it is never the system itself that makes it what it is

that depends on the games

oh and halo 3 will not be out at the ps3 launch

P.S halo sucks

If you look at when the ps2 came out and the xbox, sony had the jump on them and got out the system first, but it didn't stop xbox from doing quite well in the market....although bill took a 1billion dollar loss in reveneau (SP?)

I think one of the main reasons the ps3 is taking so long to come out is because of the costs.....when the ps2's first came out you were looking at the same price as the what the best xbox 360 package came out. Personally I think they are waiting because of the blue ray technology is still knew to the market and that means it's still very expensive......only time will tell, but I think sony will do fine.

I'm not exactly sure what Sony is thinking here.

The $500 PS3 is upgradeable to the equivalent of the $600 package except for one thing: the HDMI output. It's (yet another) connector for getting the video signal from an electronic device to high-def monitors.

If Sony expects the everyone to upgrade to HDTVs to get the 'full' PS3 experience, why are they leaving out this critical piece of hardware? Sure, we can live without the wireless and memory card readers in the $500 package, but no HDMI? Not only that, but if you're using analog HD outputs on your gimped PS3, there's a good chance that your fancy new Blu-Ray movie will be downgraded from full, 1920x1080 hd glory to *1/4* the resolution! Granted, that's still better than DVD, but it's certainly not high-def!

This is supposed to be an HD console?

So, on the one hand, Sony is telling us that the PS3 is the beginning of 'true' HD gaming, but is leaving that capability out of the $500 version! On the other hand, they're conceding that, yeah, HD isn't that important, and people won't get that HD experience anyway. Future-proof console my ass! Do they figure once somebody can afford a $1500-$2000, HDMI-capable HDTV that they won't mind springing another $600 for a new PS3? Heck, by the time I can save up for one, most original PS3's will probably have stopped working anyway.

I know people have more disposable income these days, but that's a bit much.

Also, $5-600? heh, yeah, right. Consoles priced that high have done poorly. Oh, except the Atari 2600, and now that's just a name owned by a French company. Is this Sony's new strategy? To be owned by France?

Of course, PS3 will own Japan, but that video game market is taking a dive. How badly do you want to play Final Fantasty XIII? Heh, one thing's for sure, Japanese gamers sure don't want to play Halo.

To take full advantage of the Cell architecture developers must break their code in to "small nuggets" and use a different compiler for the SPEs making developing for the PS3 more difficult then it needs to be.

The Xbox 360 has 3, dual-core CPUs. They're all exactly the same. So I write my code and then compile it. Now it can be executed on any one of the 6 CPU cores. Sweet.

PS3 has 8 cores, but they're not all the same. So, my code has to be written to run on a certain processor core on the PS3. I can get the same, and probably better than 360, performance, but now I have to be much more careful where I'm handing out processing duties to the different parts of the PS3. This increases development time.

With that low-res, 20" TV sitting in your dorm room, do you think you're going to notice the difference if the PS3 has an extra shiny graphic here or an extra 40 bad guys in Dynasty Warriors 7? Are you going to be a fanboy and point it out to me everytime even though you had to wait an extra 6 months for the PS3 version? Will you be upset when I politely point out I've already beaten the game and am now playing Halo 3?

Just Dave, I have nothing against the Playstation. I love all the systems. I want the PS3.

But reading various gamers forums yesterday I am reading post after post of people saying they will switch to the Xbox.

Now the Xbox coming out a year earlier than the PS3 would obviously not be enough to topple the ps3, but the price tag combined with the xbox being out already probably will.

My prediction stands - sony is making a huge mistake.

i know you dont have anything against the playstation but i still think you are wrong

yes the system has a high price point but if people want it enough they will buy it and something tells me that a lot of people will

and once again it really comes down to the games.........which i will add the microsoft did a very smart thing by talking to rockstar about getting the GTA games out at the same time as the ps3 does

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Actually, after playing it on line I gave it another chance, and yes it' s a good single player game. I'm not saying its WONDERFUL. But it's good.

As for the flop, I believe that it will not sell as good as Sony is planning. I believe they will drain as much cash as they possible can and bring down the price alot sooner then they had hoped. I'm not saying its not going to sell at all, but I think the numbers will disappoint Sony.

But it's what the majority of people want these days.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Good Point Mark, sell what people want, so they buy more of it =)

That being said ... the PS3 online is free, xbox charges a monthly fee...... hmmm ???

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

It's a yearly fee.

You can still get online (with 360) without paying anything. You have to pay to play multiplayer.

Just because Sony isn't charging you money to get to their online service, doesn't mean third-party software companies won't. They've also stated they'll have pay-for features, much like Live's Marketplace.
