DJ Nocker
Yea I am a nail biter, I do it all the time and have been doing it since I was about 7 years old. I have tryed everything to stop myself, but its to bad a habit. I bite them till they bleed and if i cant reach my nails, i bite the skin on the tips of my fingers...its terrible. I was wondering if anyone else bites there nails, it doesnt have to be to the extent of what i do but yea...who else?

Fierce Critter
I was a nail biter up to around age 18. Thought there was no way I'd ever manage to stop. Then, I was in a store with my sister one day. She has always had gorgeous, well-manicured nails. But she's really, really conservative about her appearance. We came across this radical nail polish, in colors like electric blue, etc. I told her she should try some of that, and of course, she said no. And I responded, "Well, then I'll grow my nails and buy it myself." And I did. That was it. Just cold-turkey. I ended up with beautiful, long nails. And sure 'nuff I bought that cool nail polish. Matter of fact, I got into some pretty wild polishing technics for a while there. I quit growing them after a while because I couldn't play guitar anymore. But I never went back to really biting them like I had previously. If I have one with a jagged edge, I might nibble it to try to even it out, but not if I can get to a file. I do admit that I did develop a bit of a habit of nibbling my cuticles for a time, sort of as a replacement behavior. They say that you don't quit a habit, that you have to replace it. To stop biting mine, I kept mine polished and did lots of touch-ups. To stop biting yours, you'll have to try to figure something else out. Worth a shot. Fierce Critter
Adding: in moments of particular stress, such as rushing around the morning of a move or trip with a ton to do and not enough time to do it, I'll rush about with my nails in my teeth, biting them off one by one. Old habits die very, very hard.

JaneDead
i have never done this and the thought of biting my nails grosses me out (if i have a nail i need to bite off because it broke and i can't cut it right then, the feeling of biting my nail grosses me out/bothers my teeth so i never got the nail biting thing) i noticed one day my daughter never seemed to need her nails cut. they were always pretty short. so i started to pay more attention to what she was doing that kept them so short. i saw her one day finally biting her nails. she is only 2 so i thought that was so weird. i wonder what makes people want to bite their nails? but then people like me are totally grossed out by it. kellygrrrrrl
Well, since I've done it before I can remember...I'll say it's completely an impulse thing. I do it even when I'm not paying attention. I'll make a concious decision to never bite them again. Then before I know it, I'm biting. I get stressed, I bite my nails, I get excited, I bite, sad...bite.... I get engrossed in conversation, I'm biting. I don't know why. I've never thought about why I do it. My Grandmother might as well faint if she saw me bite..... She always has and probably will always to continue to do fingernail check..... I'm not as bad as I used to be. I'll paint them, they'll look So-So for about 4-5 days, then the paint chips, I start to bite or scrape the paint off which spirals out of control into biting the nail off instead.... It's love hate realtionship with my nails. Yes, I am sickened by the thought of microbials, and germs and such, but tell a smoker that they are going to die of cancer, and see how far that goes.... 6 days cold turkey BTW.... Msterbeau
I bit my nails once. It was great. :-P Actually...I did bite them for a long time. One day I decided that was a bad habit that had to go. I've bitten them only rarely since. Besides... it's more fun to use nail trimmers!!

Scary Guy
I've always bitten them to trim them. Lots of bad things live under them though so I always wash real good before hand.
