bav
I'm in the same boat as Disturbed, I had a phase where I listened to R&B, and I still listen to some Rap but now, it just seems like repeatative BS. Every song sounds the same and it gets a little anoying. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> You just described my feelings about some of synthpop, actually. I enjoy a fair amout of it (Covenant/VNV style), but there's a lot of it even within the Futirepop sub-sub-genre that just gets to me and makes my teeth ache on an individual basis. I've discovered recently that it seems to be because invaribly a lot of what gets played is at 120-130 bpm and is somewhat monotone in nature, so I get frustrated with listening to what feels like the same track for 20-30 minutes. Also just realized tonight that another part of it that grates is the constant build up-build up-fast--PAUSE-build up-build up-fast-PAUSE style. I just don't like the breaks in dancing where everyone is standing around.
Daniel
There is good stuff and bad stuff in about any genre. I like the idea behind R&B, but don't actually like any R&B. I do like a lot of rap. I used to like some hip hop. Most of what I like from those genres is old (80s), but I like the occasional new thing... usually more underground shit. The over produced radio stuff is just boring and uninspired. Interestingly enough, I like more rap than I do EBM and synthpop. I don't agree that there are a lot of similarities between R&B/rap and EBM/synthpop. EBM and synthpop lack any measure of soul or groove. The vocals are typically dry and horrible, even when trying to sound weepy and emotional. It always ends up sounding too contrived and just... too damn white. Not that this is necessarily bad, but it is just too much and too static. In much smaller doses it might be ok. In high school and immediately after (early 90s), I was way into "industrial". Somewhere around 1997 or 1998, that "genre" became stale as shit. Now, anything that gets described as "industrial" causes me to be extremely suspicious of it. Though, I incidentally like a lot of stuff that comes out that has a bit of old-school industrial edge to it. I like a little country-ish stuff, but mostly from that whole circle of musicians like Nick Cave, Will Oldham, Tom Waits, Johnny Cash, etc. The stuff the NASCAR people are listening to, or singing while at the karaoke bad, I can't stomach. Particularly the post-Garth Brooks stuff.

TomCat
I like some, but not the "Su@& my A$$ and put it in your A$$" gangsta BS. That's neither R & B or even "Hip Hop."
lullaby1031
I've never been one to listen R & B - it's always been a mix mostly of just rap if I did listen to it. But when you have a younger brother who's all into the huge bass systems - things tend to grow on ya! I've mainly stuck around the metal genre. Not all "gangsta" rap is bad - hell, I prefer it because SOME - I will not say all - rap about real life - I say some since there are many who try but end up lying about it and making themselves look stupid. The Game for instance - He's a newer rapper from Cali and unlike some rap stars after they get huge - this guy gave BACK to his community and bought up a piece of his old neighorhood in Compton - and is currently trying to make that place better. So I respect people who take their talents and find a way to be the peoples voice and changes the way things are. He's even called it the Black Wallstreet - which also has some Huge historical value to that name that not many people know about as well.
